I went to the Roadless Task Force meeting here in Grand Junction this week and was extremely disappointed at the lack of 4x4 users represented there. Most of the local ATV club showed up as well as people who had easily traveled 3-4 hours to get to this meeting. The greenies wore mostly white shirts and I would say there was pretty much an even split of greenies vs. the people that want to keep the trails open in the forests. The greenies would like us to believe that the Roadless rule only applies to keeping additional roads from being built in the forests/BLM lands. After having one of my favorite trails closed in UT and not being able to take my children to that area as a result, I am not trusting the government to keep that kind of promise.
My daughter, age 9, got up and talked to the approximately 250 people in attendance as well as addressing the panel. She asked them to keep our trails open and told of how her brother was able to see the area I had explored as a child, but when I went to take her that road had been closed.
For those of you that don't know me, two of my children have a handicap where they lose the strength in their muscles. This is a condition that is exacerbated by exercise and Palisade Mike has seen me having to get them out of his Jeep and walk them around to get their strength back on the trail. I also addressed the panel and those in attendance letting them know that keeping trails open in wilderness areas will allow my children and others to enjoy the scenery that they would not otherwise be able to access.
After the meeting I met with Brian Hawthorne from Blue Ribbon Coalition. He informed me that there is a part of this rule that might make it through which would prevent trails from being used by motorized vehicles over 50 inches wide. I understand that the task force will be meeting next week to present their findings to the governor and would encourage you to send in your comments if you have not already. YOU ONLY HAVE UNTIL 6/30/06 TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!!! Please find out who your local task force members are or your State/Local representatives and let your voice be heard.
Our state representative for the Grand Junction area, Josh Penry has let the public know that the Roadless Task Force ruling will affect travel on our trails. There was an article in the local paper about this that can be found at this link:

Lastly, I would encourage you to contact Brian Hawthorne with the Blue Ribbon Coalition to offer your support against having our wilderness areas closed under the Roadless Task Force ruling. I gave him this website and he said he would need all the support he can get if the part of this ruling makes it through that allows trails over 50" wide to be closed. His email address is:

Lets keep this thread active and feel free to make links to it from other websites.
Thank-you for your support.
