He's probably using flux core for the same reason I am, no gas.

Go look at your stock TB mount and then answer again. The stock mount is like a formed gusset that wraps around the coil. On the front side of the mount it comes out quite a bit.

Ghost, I'm still running the stock mount, but I'm leaning more towards something like this:

That way the designed strength of the stock mount can be utilized but I can rotate the heim 90 degrees. Just looking at it I might be able to add a brace to the oposite frame easily later if the mood strikes me.

As far as the welds, I'll let more qualified people comment on the quality. Personally I don't see anything wrong with flux core. It usually doesn't look as pretty but supposedly it's you can get better pentration with it. The only big wire feed welders I have seen (1800-2400 amps) are submerged arc. Gas shielded flux core, flux core can't be all that bad, just less pretty.
 
having flux melt and spatter while the weld metal is solidifying increases the chances that there is porosity and inclusions of non-metallic particles throughout the metal. this would mean a decrease in strength for the weld.

I personally haven't used flux core...i have little experience welding with a MIG

as far as the desing of that mount...i think its not that bad...a little rough..with good welds and some refinement it could work.

one thing to consider is that there is a lot of stress concentrated in the area that is closest to the frame. Reducing the amount of welds in this area by using formed sections would increase the strength of the mount.

thanks Linclon and others that have offered good comments and sugestions. I cut the excess off yesterday and the welds look like they penitrated well. The angle that is for the heim to mount is still being tested for the best posiable way to mount it and not interfear with the mount nuts. If you look in the picture with them sitting on the mount the idea was to cut them down and fully weld them with rosuettes on the face. I'll post more later when I get it done. I am also now looking into a gussete for the back. One Ton, and anyone else, I was thinking of a big fat short triangle that runs from the top to the bottom of the bracket. Any thoughts?

I built a custom mount for mine using a sp125+ and it's been holding fine for a number of years now on skinny 33's. Take a look at my D44 article on www.madxj.com in the tech section if you would like a pic. It is a 90 degree piece of 3/16 bolted to the body, a piece of trimmed box steel welded to the bottom, and an additional piece welded to the outside of the bracket that goes from the top of the L shaped piece to the bottom of the box steel. There are a couple other braces on the thing too. Jeff
