See? Here's a prime example of what I'm talking about. Although JeepinCoastie sounds like a borderline tard if you evaluate his writing, he's probably not. He just can't be bothered to grammar it up while he's firing it off in a casual manner. Not unlike letter correspondence...

Unlike you....who just always sounds like a tard. :D

I find it funny that people are bitching about it at all I mean if we stop then there will be no more NAXJA. It will have to become North American XJ Association huh?

I have no issues with acronyms like WTF,LOL and such. What I hate is people who are so flipping lazy they can't capitalize an "I" or spell out "you"

and btw, i hope you guys are just kidding around with all of this talk about creating lists of acceptable things to say on here.

but if you aren't, you need to get a hobby or something that you can spend this free time on instead of being annoyed with this stuff to the point you want to create rules against it.

...where's that thread that dealt with the sad state of naxja again? <<scratches head in confusement>>
Hear, hear (or is it "here, here"? haha)

Rules suck.

This is not english class, they aren't applying for a job or trying to impress anyone. If you don't like to read it, don't.

I'm seeing more folks using texting syntax and spelling here.
It is hard to read and harder to understand for those of use which were brought up using the basics.

I'm thinking it should be a board rule.

"You must exibit the Spelling and Grammer skills of a 4th Grader to use this Forum"

I would have considered a 6th Grade level, but since the local paper is written at that level, and most folks now days can't read that...
You spelled 'Exhibit' wrong. :D

its a lot easier to type like that and some things like using u for you is just a lot easier and accepted now and if u cant figure that out well im sry after 4 yrs in highschool and always texting on my phone i dont think i could even type 100% gramatically correct without taking like half an hour to make sure i didnt shorthand anything
4 years of high school for me, constant texting on the phone.. Plus I'm a sophomore in college and I'm only 18.. You dont see me shorthand everything, pretty much I text correctly too. And faster then most people out there, gotta love T9.

I recall taking a course in Linguistics (Humanities requirement) a few quarters ago. One question I had was this - "Is 'ebonics' a subset of the English langage corrupted, is it a dialect of the English language, or is it simple laziness?"

Man would I have loved to be "the fly on the wall" during that discussion.

The above quote was the last straw - I want YOU moderating the rest of the Presidential debates (and asking all the questions)!!!

Now where did I put that popcorn....?

Well maybe I'm the minority teenager here but I hate those stupid friggin abbreviations. I'm not the fastest typist but I would still rather spell out the words than use the abbreviations, to me abbreviating things just makes you sound dumb. I do text message people from time to time, but to me it's not worth saving the 2 seconds to put "u" instead of "you". On a side note, whoever came up with "LOL" should be shot.

I'll be the first to admit that my grammar while posting flat out sucks. I type like I speak, I overuse commas, putting them where I would pause while speaking and I tend to run on. If it bothers anyone I apologize. If I took the time to proofread every post I type up on every forum I wouldn't have time to get much else done.
I freely admit I'm not great either. However, I at least try to be "good" and re-read what I wrote before hitting the "Post Button"

After thinking about it I tend to agree with both or you and I'd like to take back my 'second' (is that even possible?).
Yet, I would like to see things become where people at least try to post with complete meaningful thoughts.

I tend to agree with almost everything you ever post, but this time I'd like to make a small tweak. I don't have a problem with acronyms that are used in moderation. When I come across a post that is full of them (especially 'LOL') I just read over it.

Huh? Is that now longhand or slang for "LOL"?

You're not alone. Although I'm not a teenager, I'm still young compared to some of these old farts. I agree with you, I too also take the extra 2 seconds if I ever send a text message (seldom do I send them) to type out the full word.

While most (well maybe some) abbreviations/acronyms don't bother me. Like I stated above, over use of them bothers me. Along those same lines, people who TYPE IN ALL CAPS bother me the most. However, these 'bothers' I can live with and just brush off, not worth making me mad or losing sleep over :)

i'm honestly not trying to be an arse and this isn't a personal attack, i'm just trying to defend the opposing view.

stuff like LOL is just an acronym

ac·ro·nym /ˈækrənɪm/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ak-ruh-nim] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words, as Wac from Women's Army Corps, OPEC from Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or loran from long-range navigation.

so we should do away with calling our country the USA? darn those slackers and not wanting to type out United States of America!!!! << shakes fist in the air >>
[/sarcasm]

therefore through deductive logic, you don't like acronyms. you're gonna need to change your sig ;)

1990 XJ Pioneer-4.0, AW4, NP231, Disco Turdy, Chrysler 8.25, RE 3.5" SF, BFG 31x10.50 A/Ts, 99+ intake, 97+ header panel and bumpers, 97+ overhead console, 97+ front doors, it's pretty much a 97+ poser. Getting 99 drivetrain and dash swapped in.
1988 MJ Pioneer-4.0, Puke Goat, 2wd, 4.5" lift in front and SOA in the rear (about 5"), and 33"s.
1999 XJ Sport-4.0, AW4, NP231, D30, C8.25, Superlift 3", 31x10.50 A/Ts. It's now the DD.

-Hi, my name's Collin...and I hate acronyms.

that last one was just a joke ;)

again, i'm just trying to make a point about what we're really talking about. it doesn't matter to me if anyone doesn't particularly care for acronyms. that's everyones prerogative. i just don't like it when others try to make others conform to theirs. (not that collin was - i simply quoted him to make my point about acronyms)

and where to we stop? should we ban contractions as well? i mean come on, if we don't like LOL why should we like words like can't, we're, and don't?

Not my fight, but...'XJ' is not an acronym for 'Jeep Cherokee'. XJ is the model designation.

Carry on.

The only thing that totally pisses me off is the use of fake html tags. ;)

(and smilies)

I have to agree with the gist of this thread. Naxja is not the place to be using text typing. I find it easier to ignore people asking for help if they can't even be bothered to type out entire words. It makes me wonder if they are only going to read part of what I am typing.

On the other hand, I have no problems typing LOL in a post, or to someone else in an e-mail. I think it helps those of us with little language structuring ability (like myself) give background to a statement, hopefully avoiding unintended offense. You know what I mean? It kind of tells the other person/people that you find something amusing, or that you may not be entirely serious.

Certainly more appealing than explaining everything about what you're motives are in italics after each sentence. As I type this, I am shuddering at the thought.

Guess that means as long as the intended recipient understands it, it is a valid form of communication. To bad if you don't like it.
