Tired of reading "texting" type posts

Haha this is an interesting thread! I USED to be a master at English, writing and reading every chance i get. I'm still pretty good, but i find that this internet lingo HAS made me a lazy typer, and sometimes when typing letters to people I'll throw in LOL's and hahaha's. They look terrible, especially if the person you are writing to has NO clue what LMAO is, or where the hell to find a ROFLCOPTER.

I am making a concerted effort as of late to type exactly as i would like to read it: NOT lazy style. I've even started using caps again, that all but forgotten key to the left of the "z" and to the right of the "?".

Anyhow, i really do think that posting in this "shorthand" creates horrible habits. It's cutting corners, and i bet very few of us would do this on our Jeep! If you cut corners in a build or repair on your junk, it doesn't last long. Same goes with our beautiful English language! I vote we make great grammar and well-flowing sentences the rule instead of the exception. It really doesn't take that much more effort in the long run. :)

One more once -
An "acronym" is a pronouncable abbreviation. An "abbreviation" is usually the first letter of each word - or may be a longer word with some letters removed, with the word proper remaining in a recognisable form. "NASA" is an acronym. "TPS" is not. "CPS" is not. Therefore, an "acronym" is a specific type of abbreviation - a subset, if you will, not a synonym.
"ac·ro·nym

NOUN:

A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words, such as radar for radio detecting and ranging"

Actually "TPS" is not a synonym because it is not a silime for an idea for the idea, in the way that 5-90 stands for the arcane use of old english, or that Hitler was an example of evil incarnate, but it is in fact is an abreviation for the idea :D

I still think it is closer to an acronym :D

I do see your point, though many still pronounce "NASA" (Naasah) as "N.A.S.A."

____

I looked up ROLFCOPTER and was dissapointed that it wasn't a real thing :(
I was imagining this machine with spinning blades made by some swedish guy named "Rolf" ;)

Or "LASER" - "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation." In use, acronyms are also typically rendered in all caps - "RADAR," vice "radar" (since it's still a set of initials.)

And, I was referring to "acronym" not being a synonym for "abbreviation" - as mentioned, "acronyms" are a subset of "abbreviations," but they are not the same thing.

"Fortnight" = two weeks. No, I've no idea where it comes from offhand. I do still catch myself using "sen'night" once in a great while - which means "one week," as in "sen'night past" (a week ago.)

"LASER", like SCUBA have become so commonplace that they have become words themselves, instead of acronyms. We are in a world that charges by the letter and time it takes to write, until that changes words will keep getting shorter. It makes it fun to look at word origins, at least. And see how much we have butchered them.

And from google, "Fortnight" - Hadrian's Wall, built to guard the Romans northern England border against the marauding Scots, had forts situated at regular intervals along its length. Every two weeks the soldiers got to sleep inside them and this is where our term for two weeks, 'Fortnight' comes from.

I think it gives my writing some flavour. Besides, I'll write in American English for seriously formal missives and for my books - but for everything else, it's a sort of "fingerprint" for my writing.

I had a particularly annoying "English" teacher in middle school that pushed me in this direction (a sort of "backlash reaction," if you will) and I never saw any reason to drop the habit.

Interestingly, the "International" version of English is rather close to the "British English" or "Australian English," and since I tend to communicate with people from all over, it's the form most readily understood...

By the by - as long as we're on the subject of "proper English" - the word "English" is capitalised when referring to either the language (any variant) or the nationality... :twak: :laugh3:
Just blowin some shit your way, brother. You are so serious.:looney:
