the one in the first link is the one i was thinking of. i dont think we would be able to use the ones in the second link though. they appear to be hold down clamps.

i have seen pictures of and have heard people taking the latch pictured and linked above and putting it on a 45* angle. this would pull the tire carrier in tight to a stop on the bumper as well as pullling it tight against the top face of the bumper. you could further reduce vibration/squeeks if you "pad" the part of the bumper that contacts the tire carrier with a hard plastic or HDPE. that would eliminate metal on metal contact

Those latches are ok if its a mall crawler. If it ever hits anything off road it will bend. I know because I went through 2 of them and strightened them probably 5 times each.

I went with a double T handle. On road I only run the vertical one, off road I run the vertical handle too. Makes it strong enough I can high lift off it the swing away or put a strap on it.

Yeah Northern winters combined with the previous owner being a surf fisherman. (that I swear fell asleep and let the tide come in and float my jeep around)
I guess to that point... I would not be surprised to find barnacles(that crap on the bottom of boats?) on the bottom of my XJ

Don't worry Not many people on here can spell, and those that can... are not usually nice about how they tell people... but here is a hint... Firefox has spell checker build in...

I'm laughing... I was going to suggest that you launched a boat and didn't move from the ramp for a week or so...! The barnacles are starting to make sense.

Spell check was a big friend of mine while I was taking classes but haven't I got it on my sys now... another reason to shape up or Firefox out.

yes, barnacles are the small white "crap" that grow on the bottom of boats, rocks, docks, oysters, etc.
They grow in shallow waters and tidal areas. (My dad grows oysters for a side hobby, and barnacles are the devil, they grow everywhere they can attach to.)
