time for tires....cooper?

DO NOT get the Workhorses. A set of these came on my Wrangler when I bought it. They are the worst tires I have ever seen. The compound is as hard as a rock, and they get no traction except on dry pavement, and even then its marginal. The sidewall said EXTRA GRIP, whoever printed that must have been on crack. :smoker:

I have the Workhorses on my Chevy truck, and they don't seem all that bad. They're a lot better than the OEM Firestones that came on it. Firestone managed by some alchemy to combine hardness, noise, zero snow traction, poor handling and bad wear in equal doses. The Workhorses are only moderately lousy by comparison, and they were relatively cheap for 16 inch tires. They're fair on snow but pretty poor on mud, tolerable on the road.

Are they the Extra Grips? Maybe I just had a bad batch, but it seemed like I could never get traction. I concur, however that Firestone worked hard at making terrible tires for the chevys and did a great job.

i have 35'' cooper discovery st's??? i believe on my bronco ill go check in a minute and they do awesome on the street and have a good bit of mileage on them and the tread hasnt faded much also do great in the mud thats the only terrain ive taken them on besides pavement...plus the price on them is just right

On my first set of discoverer s/t's- Lt30x9.5,no complaints.Had a little freezing rain and snow last winter, went wherever I pleased.

I've been putting off getting tires for about 2 months now, but this thread got my attention...

Seems that the coopers are considered to be pretty great tires for the price. I have a question though... I'd be deciding between the Discoverer ATs or the LTs, anyone have specific info on which would be better on a DD in the northeast? Also, what is the actual ply difference between these two?

Just installed the Disc A/T in 235/70R15 on my 98 (Daily Driver.... no lift, no money). Major diff on the LT and AT is the tread pattern. Dad likes the AT better for year around driving than the LT. He ran 3 sets of LT on his old truck and has put 2 sets of AT on his Ram. Both are avaliable in LT versions (which gives them a higher load range and firmer sidewalls). IMO no question, the AT is a better all season tire than the LT.

:lecture: Side note: Dad worked for Cooper for over 20 years in the headquarters in Findlay Ohio. Great company and great product for the money. I liked it soo much I got stock in the company!

Thanks a lot for taking time to post this info :) I think I'll do some calling around today for the ATs!

It's kinda' nice and validating to see the positive comments about Cooper Discoverer tires. I had bad experiences with the ones I owned. My first Jeep was a used '73 Wagoneer. When I bought it, I had identified two that I was interested and, in the end, both wagoneers seemed to be pretty equal as to condition, mileage, price, etc. So, I bought the one I did because it had this GREAT LOOKING set of Cooper Discoverer tires. I can't recall for certain whether they were L/T's or A/T's; A/T's, I'm pretty sure. Well, what they would do is pick-up a sharp rock in the tread and the next rock they hit would just drive that first rock through the tire. I was CONSTANTLY changing and repairing and replacing (because of damage beyond repair) Coopers. During day-before-elk-opener-scouting one year I had THREE flats in one day from this. Otherwise (I guess that's a big concesstion) they were great tires. I long had suspected the real problem might have been that this set had, basically, rotted in a warehouse somewhere and were actually very old when first put into use . . . . I think your comments may have helped substantiate that, in my mind. Don

How long ago was this? The LT and STT came out late 80's, and the later line (H/T, A/T, AST, etc) came out in the early 90's. I had 2 sets of H/T's on my 94 Dakota but they would not last because I enjoyed leaving them everywhere else (on the inner fenders, street... 5.2 with an auto and 3.55 limited slip in a 3400 lb Dakota is FUN1) I was close on the H/T for the Jeep but felt the A/T with it's open tread would be better in snow. That being said the H/T did great in snow too if I kept my foot off the gas.

I really don't know. It was probably 1989 that I sold the Wagoneer and, at that time, I had a couple-year-old set of Les Schwab recaps on there that I had a difficult time convincing the new owner that they were actually recaps and not new ('bout 10K miles as I recall . . . actually did look nearly new . . . ). If I had to guess, I'd say that, if they were rotted/decayed/past-their-shelf-life, those Coopers likely dated back to the late seventies or early eightys. Don

Sounds like the early ones. Here are the ones we are talkin about:

STT New version

A/T (What I am using)

H/T (Ran on the old Dakota)

S/T-C (newer design)

Last and not least the LT
discovererLT.jpg

I just got back from shumaker (tire place) and I looked at some cooper STTs. I think that might be what I'm going to go with. it sounds like they will do alright. they looked and felt pretty solid. I'm still trying to get to the bottom of the whole tread wear. I'm assuming that they wont be too bad.

well, we know that cooper hasn't changed the pictures on the website for 18 months...

Your point?

Heres one.........................
Example:
I wanted some new LT's like the bottom pic.
(GREAT tire, btw)
Went to their site and saw them there.
Went to a Cooper dealer.....
They no longer make that tire.

I buy American when ever I can and Coopers fit the bill. Just had a set of Discoverer ATR's put on my 97 two days ago. I immediately noticed a smoother ride upon leaving the shop. They also seemed to smooth out the gravel road I live on.
The owner of the shop is 3rd generation and has been in business for 65 years. He sells most major brands but runs Coopers on his company and private vehicles.

That was basically my point. The info in a thread that's 18 months old probably isn't relevant anymore.

Ha Ha! I didnt even relize how old the thread was. but I see your point now. I went and had the tire in my hand so I'm positive that the place that I'm getting them from does have them
