thrush muffler?

I think he's talking about the glass packs.

I think what Darky is saying is, hot exhaust particles could exit the exhaust pipe and start a brush fire. Not good in the forest.

A few years ago ( I think in 2009) a poorly maintained vehicle back fired in the Florida Everglades. It took the park rangers and the fire department days to put out that fire. The last thing I heard they were trying to get the owner of that vehicle to reimburse the moneys spent.

what do you mean by that darky? are you saying im not legal the way that it is? i wont know how the fumes will react. i have even got to put it on the road yet. worst case is that i have to run it out of the back. not really a big deal to me. its not hard to change it if i need to. its mainly going to be a weekend beater and back up vehicle for when it snows and such. as far as the heat goes i was always able to stand by it when the exhaust came out of the back. it didnt seem too hot but again it will be something i have to address when i get to that point.
I was referring to the guy running glasspacks. They're good and all, but the USFS requires some form of spark arrestor. A chambered muffler works, for sure, most others do as well, but a glass pack is definitely not a spark arrestor, and even some flow through mufflers might be a problem.

How well do catalytic converters act as spark arrestors?

I don't know about you guys, but I tried to get a 2.5" welded Thrush for my XJ recently and it was nearly imposable and the only places that could order it wanted wanted $100 or more for it:wow:

I ended up ordering a stainless 2.5" Magnaflow for $88 and their OBD2 legal cat for $92 and then got a coupon for $20 off the order through a local Advanced Auto.

Cats aren't spark arrestors as far as I know. The USFS should have a list on mufflers that are acceptable.

i always thought that the spark arresting part of the exhaust was the cat hence the baffling inside. you learn something new everyday.

Good thing I dont live in the US then...

I've never seen any sort of fire start in my wake and I run the same trails every weekend. Theres about 8 different trails I run all year and in 5 years of wheeling almost every weekend I've never seen any brush fires started.

No need to get all defensive. I don't personally care what you run, just pointing out info for people who would be subject to US law, it would suck to be out having a good time and have a Ranger who cares pull you over and kick you out.

Well if you want it to sound decent get the welded. If you want it to sound like crap get a glasspack. IMO, Glasspacks are garbage and should never be put on ANYTHING!!!! :puke:

maybe the cherry bombs sound like caca but my magnaflow is a straight through glass pack and i love the way it sounds. i do have a full tail pipe on it too.

and yes i know i quoted you from a few weeks ago.
