This sucks....

Just blew up my D30. The pin snapped in half, got caught in the pinion gear, cranked sideways broke the carrier, took off the inside edge of the ring gear. It is so wadded up in there I haven't been able to get the aussie out yet, but hopefully it is ok.

This blows!!!!

It was only the 3rd day since new bearings and aussie in that axle.

Ouch! Good luck. Hope you can save that Aussie.

Me too!

Yeah, my friend who owns a shop and is a mechanic did it. I looked at it a bit more tonight. It looks like somehow the cross shaft slid out, hit the pinion gear and snapped it in half, breaking the carrier. I haven't taken the locker out yet (although getting ready to) but it looks like it MIGHT be ok. It was obviously rubbed by the remaining cross shaft but it appears it is only on the outside. I will know more when I get it out but it appears somehow it spit out the shaft vs the locker failing. Has anyone seen or heard of this before?

Here's some pics of the carnage. Think the locker is salvagable???

I have a friend who has a d30 with a bent housing. He wants 100 for it + some Rusty's HD CA brackets. Sound like a good deal. I would have to switch out the carrier and gears though and I don't know how to do that. Or would I be better off looking for an axle without a bent housing or just regearing while I have to do this?

you could regear either way (here's the excuse to get it done since I see you wear a ring). Bent housing would worry me a little, how bent especially the axles into the carrier. Your housing is good, keep it in place use carrier from the other and regear.

Hmm, wouldn't have thought to use nurse as my user name in a car crowd. Closest I come is lpnracct

Yeah, the nurse thing is a kinda from a motocycle thing. I stole it from "The Doctor" aka Valentino Rossi. Supposed to be funny, but kinda wish I did something different for this forum....nobody gets it here.

That does suck.

$100 + brackets seems like a heck of a lot to me. $50 and no brackets is more like it for a bent D30, they are just too common.

Its actually I pay $100 for the axle and CA brackets. The brackets are $60 new so in reality I am paying $40 for the axle.

Thoughts????

I don't recall if a D30 center pin is retained by a roll pin, or a bolt. Are there any remnants of that?

I wouldn't use a bent housing, regardless of any trick parts that may be on it. Like John said, if you were going to buy the brackets, then you may want it. But cutting the brackets off the bent housing, cutting your brackets off, welding them to yours and spending an extra $40 hardly seems worth it. Although you would get a carrier out of it, as long as it isnt bent too. I think grabbing up a good D30 from the salvage yard or something would be a better route. Especially if you want to regear to say 4.10s and find the whole thing at a yard...if you can swap the Aussie out, you're golden. Then you'd only have the cost of the axle and buy some other brackets if you really wanted them.

Thanks for the opinions guys. The brackets are actually not installed and are new, so I wouldn't have to cut them off. They aren't something I HAVE to have but when I get my x member made I can put my long arms on and use them. I could also use the axle shaft nubs so I can drive it in 2wd for now as hunting season starts next week and I need a truck. I could then take the carrier and gears and put them in my axle. Still not decided though.

Does it look like I can salvage the aussie?
