It was quite funny to see that setup on a long Flatbed trailer..

Not even that long! I think they said it had an 18 foot deck. Still trying to figure out how that worked.

Why is the wheel so far back in the wheel well?
 
I was wondering the same thing. I assumed it had something to do with tongue weight. Either that or some funky set of stubby trailer leaf springs that'd only mount farther back. Idk.
 
That photo is likely after the broke both center pins and before they repaired it.

Wow, broke both center pins on a non-driven axle. That's impressive.

They used an extra spring leaf that was wider than the factory springs. They notched one side but not the other. When they bolted it together the force from the ubolt pushing against the wider spring caused the centering pin to snap.
