The Official CraigsList Thread...

Hmmm, can anyone tell what that rear axle is in the photo toward the bottom? I'm looking for a second XJ and this might be interesting to convert to 4X4. Might be a good Jeep to put my D30 with Warn hubs in. Maybe cast off my tc case as well. Anybody here ever do a 4x4 conversion before?

If you're talking about the yellow Jeep, it looks flat enough on the bottom to be the Chrysler 8.25, which is not a bad axle.

And yes, if you search around, there are quite a few folks who've done the 2x to 4x conversion. Apparently it's fairly manageable, with a little knowledge and some good tools. Look over in the Tech section, maybe? Or search "Conversion" and see what comes up.

need to swap the tranny, thats the biggest job.

not a big job at that
true, just sucks pulling a good working trans out of a cream puff jeep like that and putting in god knows what. you can have the replacement rebuilt, but by the time you do all that you could have overpaid for a clean 4x4.
i would never convert one unless the jeep is an unbelievable deal and/or the trans went bad on it.
