THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i image that just heating it would cost a good amount more in the winter if you want to keep the wood exposed on the inside for looks
The wood is surprisingly a very good insulator. I would need to look up numbers, but with how many log homes there are that don't use extra insulation, it can't be that bad.

It's like anything else (Jeeps, for instance). If you have passion for it you're willing to overlook the drawbacks/headaches. I have a little colonial right now that's almost 300 years old. She has her quirks, but it's a great place.
That's a good point. Like you say, it will have its quirks and if you are willing to put up with them it's not a big deal. I just don't think I'd be willing haha.

with a victorian or other really old house if it is structurally good are ok, but once you have to do work that can be interesting 100+ years of building code changes and peoples skills for home building

im not a huge fan of most modern construction because you find a lot from '50s, '60s, '90s, and '00 and they are all just quickly tossed up with little care because they need to keep the assembly line move while turning the biggest profit
A lot are, and a lot aren't. Gotta find the good ones.

Agree.

Which is why I'm taking my time.
No "spec house" or "slap some white paint house" here.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I don't want a log home after watching buying Alaska and seeing how they have to crank the logs and shit and the house naturally separates over time.. No thanks

well then they're retarded. My parent's log home has no issues whatsoever with separation or twisting...

Don't blame Adam. He only knows what he reads and sees on TV.

Adam, :kissyou: Can we still be friends?

edit: that is a gorgeous house. 6x8 D profile logs?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Anyone wanna buy their house? It's in upstate NY (Greene) and it's for sale!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My friends house was brand new 2-3 years ago.

2x6 walls for extra insulation, zip board instead of house wrap, 30 year roof, forced hot air/AC, 200A service, etc.

I don't see anything wrong with modern construction and I'd much rather have that.

*psst* You can't build exterior walls with 2x4s for houses anymore. 2x6 is standard.

The zip board is real nice. I'd use it again.

Haven't tried them myself, but GstarCAD and progeCAD Smart! get good reviews.

Nothing wrong with GOOD modern housing. Its the shitty slap it up in a week make as much money as possible "row of tract homes on what used to be a farmers field" housing that sucks.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

That house is real nice looking.

I couldn't afford something like that though.
Not in central, MA you couldn't.

Sounds nice, but a lot of the newer houses out there aren't like that. Slap up some walls and throw some siding and paint on. DONE.

Shit is cheap as hell up there. I can't even get a tiny crappy house down here for what they're selling it for. I grew up in that house and i'm really going to miss it when it sells. My dad built it from the ground up.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah, I have heard horror stories of companies putting up walls with no sheathing, just drywall/insulation and studs/polyisocyanurate foamboard/siding, too. That kind of severe corner cutting results in you living in a $300k cardboard box. Cheapest backwire outlets, shady wiring, doors that feel like pizza boxes, lacking crossbracing, not enough nails in the framing, cheap shitty flappy lumber, hell my aunt got burnt on a roof... the builders put down one nail in each corner of each piece of 1/2 osb and called it good. Roof basically fell apart and of course the builder was out of business by the time they found out.

That's my point  I'm fine with modern construction.

So basically like anything you have to look at a house to make sure it's not a slap together deal?

That has nothing to do with "modern construction".

You could slap together a log house.

Not in central, MA you couldn't.

Sounds nice, but a lot of the newer houses out there aren't like that. Slap up some walls and throw some siding and paint on. DONE.

I have no intention of living in central MA.

And how many newer homes have you looked at?

I'm sure it has something to do with location.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah, you can slap together any house any time, but it is most commonly an issue in tract homes/subdivisions/mcmansions from the housing boom, when builders had a huge interest in building as quickly as they could because they knew they would sell as fast as built.

I could afford that, but I'd probably not have anywhere to work

That is really awesome for that price though.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

there is NOTHING awsome about upstate NY

now trying to get some sore of motivation to work on the truck

i beg the differ. i have some friends with great pieces of property upstate, and i've explored great trails and been in some real cool little towns. i wouldnt argue if you said something about LI but upstate is nice. i wouldnt want to live there permanently though.

Not really, the logs are decent insulation, or they make insulated logs.

Thats because those developments are built when the economy is good, so harry homeowner who replaced a doorknob once becomes a contractor. Modern construction is 100% the best way to go as far as efficiency goes. Gutting and remodeling is a distant 2nd.

I have been looking at a few lots. I want to build a house myself, just dont think it will happen very soon.
