needs an airbag added on the right side

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ugh. Screw that Ken.
Can't see but is there a reason why you didn't replace the entire stud (mabye the knee wall behind?) nor extend the top plate all the way to the left stud? Looks like you have a bunch of work to go. Good luck!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

The house was built with Balloon construction, so that stud goes all the way to the foundation. I considered it, and then thought better of it...

The top plate there really doesn't serve much of a purpose, that portion of the wall is non weight bearing. I only put it back the way it was because, well, that's how it was before.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Makes sense. Balloon framed is stronger if it can be done.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

At least one wall was balloon framed but they used short 2x4s and sistered them halfway up (at slightly random heights, no less) so I'm not so sure about that. It's definitely not ideal (more like worst of both worlds) but it's held up for at least 120 years now so I am not going to mess with it.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I don't even think that would pass code now sistering them like that.
On the bright side you won't have much into it when you are done.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

yeah... I keep telling myself that.

I just spent $250 on plywood to put the new subfloor down in ONE ROOM upstairs.

It will be.

Yeah... Materials are not cheap. With the market the way it is buying is definitely cheaper than building (or maybe even re-construction/renovation).

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My place was listed as worth 127 when I bought it, and is now taxed at 97k... I need to leave more junk cars in the yard next time the assessor comes by

I think I will come out ahead, but I'm not sure. I haven't even tried to keep a running tally of what I have spent on the place so far, when I "finish" I am going to go back through my bank records and add up every HD, Lowes, lumber yard, plumbing supply, etc charge to my account and then scream and drink a lot. I know I have around 4-5k into the roof but that included buying a circ saw, 1/2" Milwaukee drill, aluminum ladder, prybars, air compressor, nailguns, air hoses, hammer, square, paper cutter (thanks a ton for that tip, Tim), a heat gun, and a billion other things I'm forgetting. I bought two full pallets of shingles, ended up with about a half a pallet left over that I am keeping around in case I build a shed or a garage in the near future. Around a thousand bucks was spent on plywood because the decking was in such horrible shape.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

too bad houses arent like cars. when its gettin old and falling apart, just sell it for a new one!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I think that's what the previous owner of my house thought houses were like.

Turns out they bought a new, bigger, nicer house elsewhere before they let this one go into foreclosure while taking all the appliances they could carry out of it. That's what my neighbors say anyways.

They also didn't have a lot of their mailing addresses updated, so their health insurance paperwork, cards, and a lot of other stuff they probably should have changed over is still showing up in my mailbox.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

well that sucks :laugh2:

Those are a "replace every time" bolt that comes with the master install kit anyways, right?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Turns out 8.75 ring gear bolts are left hand thread.

I stripped them all with an impact taking the old ring gear off

How did you not realize something was wrong after the first or even the second? I'm retarded and figured that out after I broke one in my 8.25.
