Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread
its all about motivation...and owning several daily drivers.
agreed.
seriously, can we put all this angst to use properly in the members forum?
Well there are a few things wrong with this situation that won't work for most other people .
well, probably.
One thing I think most people continue to fail to realize just because you are in one situation, does not mean everyone else is or has the ability to be in the same situation as you.
well, obviously. But usually there is someone nearby to get spare parts off of, we live in the northeast.
Not everyone can have a giant stash of jeep parts laying around their yards, or has people close to them to go easily grab one night after work, without having to sacrifice their time, missing meals, getting little sleep, wasting gas, etc.
you have 4 XJs... you can't give me shit about this at all :spin1:
When it's an emergency because I busted something, yeah, I lose sleep, time, meals, whatever, GSD. Hell, I spent Friday night at FC last year partying like crazy on zero hours of sleep since Wednesday night, and I only got home from Rob's place at like 1AM Thursday after picking the axle up and worked a full day both Thursday and Friday.
Drive on some random ass donut spare? I'm sorry but I can't drive 75mph on some random donut or unbalanced tire to get to work on 128, or adam's case the LIE.
sure you can. I have done it. Heck I've driven the MJ to Manhattan 3 times in the last 3 weeks, once with 700lbs of tools and diesel in the back and the rear axle on the bumpstops. Guess what, it made it, and if it hadn't, I had the spare parts and tools with me to fix it.
Spare shafts? I don't know about you, but I'm not going to go out and buy spare chromoly axle shafts, special ordered for my application just because "everyone should have spares. I don't have that money for shafts to sit around in the off chance that I might randomly break it one time.
Spare shafts don't have to be chromoly, they are to limp out and go home, not so you can continue to wheel exactly the same way.
$100 for a motor, and one evening? I haven't seen really any motors for $100 that I would bother putting in my Jeep. I know it will certainly take more than one evening to not halfass some job either. pulling it out and putting in? ya.
Amusingly the motor I spent the most on was the most thrashed. I paid 75 bucks for skreed's motor and drove all night to go get it (I only got it because I ran the MJ out of oil on the highway and figured I owed my friend a motor because of that, guess how that turned out? Tim is daily driving that motor right now, and the motor from the MJ lasted another 35 thousand miles and in fact still runs great), I paid about the same for the one that came with the AW4 from Bump IIRC, I paid 160 for the one I got from Bradley and it came with an awesome tubesock air filter. Guess what? It still pulls like a horse, has awesome oil pressure, and gets the same gas mileage as the other 4.0s I've owned.
I've never had help while doing a motor swap and I have never taken more than 10 hours to do it. And I pull the whole drivetrain to do it. One I did in a parking lot, in a thunderstorm, the other I did on my back porch... in a thunderstorm.
Getting shit done is easy if you sack up and work like an animal with no regard for the weather, how sore you will be tomorrow, how much blood you are losing, what your neighbors think of you, or anything else.
I really like having 3 XJ/MJs because it means if a real emergency happens and I HAVE to get somewhere I can steal parts off one of the other jeep to make it happen. Hell, I'm building my home backup generator around a 4.0 just so I can use it for spare parts for the jeeps, and the jeeps for spare parts for it, depending on what is most important at the time.
And if shit REALLY hits the fan I call up Jay, Billy, or you in a panic and buy parts off the 3 jeeps in the yard that AREN'T mine :laugh2:
