My thought process was always that the rear tires (if permanently locked together) will have a tendency to push you straight.
If you lock just the front, the wheels are turned towards the direction that you want to go rather than just pushing you forward.
Yep. Exactly.
My rig turns sharp as hell with just the front engaged. Noticeably sharper than rear-wheel only, and certainly better than all 4 locked.
Having more wheels pushing you straight makes you go straighter. That just adds to the amount of stuff that doesn't want to follow an arc. If anything, the 'classic' school of thought (locked rear, open front) is way more counter-intuitive to me.
If the concern is which is 'easier' to steer, then I understand it...but on a trail-only rig with full hydro, that's not gonna be a concern anyway.
One thing, is I'd only spool/weld the front if you're running locking hubs. An autolocker with drive flanges is cool too. Otherwise driving in 2wd is kind of a pain.
I hate hate hate wheeling without a locked front diff. As long as you've got the steering force to match, it's such a more pleasant experience IMO.
Maybe I'm just tired, but I just bust out laughing at this one! :laugh:Having more wheels pushing you straight makes you go straighter.
I'd have to agree with what is being said here, spooled rear and lockright front and anything hard packed means I'm going to be backing up. While I've never had a rig that was the other way around, I'm sure it would turn easier if those rear wheels weren't trying to be heading the way I didn't want to go. It was cheap and works great on everything but sharp corners. Of course I'm sure my mile wide rear tires don't help much either.Yep. Exactly.

What would recommend for a rig that will be street driven to the trail then? And both selectable is a lot of $$$ so I wont be going that way.Yep. Exactly.

that midarm thread... the guy is making mid-arms that are as long as some longarms
SO WHAT KIND OF HYBRID ARM ARE THEY !? MID-LONGISH ARMS?
That's Adam's derrier I think.
you guys are gay. i thought the wide load comment was about the wide tarz. not the manbutt

Oh. I thought you were saying your butt wasn't the fatt one.WRONG.
That's me.
acceptable gearset breakage
FIFY.
For the record, I never broke a D30 shaft. Went right for the gold.
That's myset up now and I dont like the popping the front makes. The rear is hardly noticable and that why I wanted selectable front spool rear. I guess the selec/selec is only $600 more and when you factor in that I'm building these on the side while still wheeling 33's it's not too bad. Only a couple weeks of living on egg noodles and water.Well, I guess that kinda narrows it down then.
Like anything else, performance comes at a price, but two lunchbox lockers is a good bang for the buck. Probably that, which is what I ran for a year and a half when I was still driving the XJ to go wheelin' on 33's.
Of course it's a slippery slope at that point, as far as what your preference will be for steering, acceptable shaft breakage, etc.
