THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ken are you looking to get the head reworked? Like port/polish, new pushrods/lifters/rockers, etc?

Or you just want it checked out and milled if needed?
Checked out and milled if needed - though if I pull it apart and things look burned or scored, might go for reworked instead. It runs great and hell, I maintained 50 most of the way home and on level ground and downhill had to make sure I didn't exceed 52 to avoid over-revving the engine, so I suspect I really just need a head gasket... but it seems like the time to get everything covered if it needs it.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ken, I'd pull the head, see how flat it is with a machinist honing stone and go from there...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Both my NMCI computer and its monitor crapped out over the weekend. Now I'm stuck with a CRT. My eyes hurt just from typing this... I need a flat panel again. The damn thing takes up half my desk too...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

How does a honing stone tell you how flat it is...?

I had to look it up
The stone will scrape high spots and leave low spots untouched. It's what they use to keep the tables of milling machines perfectly flat too. Going over a milling machine table with one of those things once a week during full time use really helps.

The owner of this emailed me back and asked if I'd buy it for $50. I countered with $35. If I can get it for that little and make it work, I'll be happy. I'm not willing to drop $75 or even $50 on it...

will it help if the head is warped? I figured I'd need some kind of really hardcore straightedge to determine that, wasn't sure.

That blows.

Right...but how does it help you tell if it's flat or not...? You tell by not being able to scrap anything off...?

will it help if the head is warped? I figured I'd need some kind of really hardcore straightedge to determine that, wasn't sure.

I'd doubt it. If it's warped it's warped.

I'm supposed to be at work!

Get your dumb Honcho driving.

It won't tell you if the head is warped, it will only tell you if it's flat or not. If it's still disgustingly not flat after you get all the small crap and little burrs off, there's a chance it's warped. But really, do you think that engine is going to care? I say hit both surfaces with the stone and slap the new headgasket in. If you're going to machine the head and stuff you might as well do a full rebuild of the whole engine.

I'd agree but you're forgetting how huge it is... my engine hoist doesn't even reach high enough to take the headlights off, nevermind pull the engine out. And it'll snap in half if I tried. The 4.0 would comfortably sit inside this block if I hollowed it out.

I can't take the engine out, and I don't want to try and do an engine rebuild with it still inside the vehicle, so I'm going to pull the heads and see what they need. If they need extensive work, I do it and hope for the best. I just really hope the cam / crank etc are fine, I don't see how they wouldn't be.

EDIT: after some googling, the LDS-465 weighs over 1800 pounds.

...and noone try to stop me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Just pull the head, clean old gasket off, install new gasket, then put the head back on. That is what is known as installing a new head gasket.

I didn't forget, that's why I'm saying just pull the heads, clean them up a little, and slap it back together. I'm sure anything you do will help.

I thought 'installing a new head gasket' meant putting the sealing foam stuff in the coolant or wherever it goes. :gee:
