Nah, this is my graduate aerodynamics class, and the professor expects us to use sound engineering judgment on assumptions. So I'm going to have to dig out my ME design book to find out the different yield stresses of various grade bolts and make assumptions of the other zillion variables which make a difference.
The way you quoted it, it looks like it just means "find the value for steel in the back of the book else you get the wrong answer" but I bet if you make note that it doesn't specify alloy, or bolt grade, and say you're assuming grade 8, you'll get points for it and maybe even bonus points. I got full credit on a project at one point that was only 75% complete (by the assignment's rules anyways) simply because I said "here is the simulation for this half, and here is a full working design for the rest that I can order parts for today, but I can't put this other part in the simulation because there is no model for the chip I used. This chip results in my design exceeding design spec by an order of magnitude while coming in 50% under budget." Really depends on the prof though.
