You must have missed my post on Sunday night. See below...

I didn't say you had to spend money, but I don't see any pictures.

No proof no love.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

so thinking about it, does anyone have a 7/8" 18tpi LHT tap? If so it changes my steel order a bit...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I looked at my Jeep for the first time in weeks, drove it too!... and went to the JY but was kicked out... and ordered parts.

Not much else I could do :( Progress begins soon. My TREs shipped today.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Is there anywhere local to buy cutting/reaming fluid? Or what would y'all recommend as a good fluid to order? I'm not sure if I will have the DOM and/or the threaded inserts by this wkend but I should be able to get the rest of my reaming and such taken care of, all parts should be in by Friday

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

there's a company that makes water soluble fluid. it's more of a coolant than a lube, though. bill, please help me here. i don't know much about coolant, only about feed rates and the like.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I mostly use PB-blaster's silicone lube when I'm tapping things... so far I've only done aluminum and it's worked OK :eyes: I bet Anthony kills me for saying that lol

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

ugh, well, that's better than doing it dry. at school we used WD-40 because i wasn't paying for cutting bits and the school didn't want to deal with extra MSDS stuff. that's the reason i don't know much. i do know that i used motor oil works well, in a pinch.

Well I am using it for reaming out my knuckles so I should prolly do it right (esp so I don't toast a reamer before I even finish the project). I would love to need it for tapping as well but theres no way I am paying over $100 for a LHT TRE tap, though that would def be my best option.

wait... I just remembered that there is a machine shop right down the road from me. IIRC they are pretty good too. Maybe they will have the taps and I can just cut the DOM to length and bring it there.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I considered WD-40 but figured it was probably not the best idea. We used AlumTap in the shop at school when doing aluminum, it's apparently suggested for ductile cast iron but not much else in the way of ferrous alloys.

EDIT: http://www.tapfree.com/productinfo.html gives some info that looks useful.

EDIT2: http://www.tapfree.com/productcomp.html seems even better!

the true value that i use for all my nuts and bolts has bottles of threading/cutting fuild that ive used with good results.

wt tool over in stoughton next to colin has TONS (read TONS) of cutting, tapping, coolants, lubes, and fuilds. everything needed for machining and working metals and such.

if you do it suuuuper slow you can do it dry, but it's almost not worth it. you're better off to do it at a normal pace. the stuff we used for reaming at work where i am now is a lot thicker, more like a paste. it was a light green color, too...

Ill have to stop by on thurs or fri. Still doesn't mean I will be able to rationalize spending the $$ on a couple taps to do the tie rods & drag link since i can pay 40$ or so and get the threaded inserts (and yes, I know the inserts are not as good as directly threading it in, but I wouldn't pay 100+ when I can pay 40.)

people have reamed knuckles dry many times.

Psst.....Mark has LH and RH taps.

Careful at machine shops, its a unquie thread pitch that only the TRE's have. standard fine thread 7/8 is 14, the TRE's is 18

Well I got the snapon reamer. Looks like it's a hand op one though I heard it can just be slapped in a drill and do OK. I will def be using fluids, not patient enough to do it super slow.

Good to know that Mark has taps. When Mark gets back I hope he reads this. Mark, how much would you want to do a few taps for me? I wouldn't trust myself to borrow the parts so I would rather pay you to do it for me :D I can drive to you and bring beer and $$.

and I know it's 18tpi, thanks for the heads up incase I didnt though

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

there are different grades of SAE thread:

UNC (coarse)
UNF (fine)
UNEF (extra fine)

7/8-18 you speak of is just the UNEF

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

what size threads does mark have a tap for?
