THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i guess first of all, i should note i don't have a tow hook, like this one does.

anthony, id make a d-ring mount 2"x8" out of some 3/4" or 1" thick stock. run it parallel with the main mountin plate straight out from where the hook is now. cut a slot through the tube right below the tow hook on the front and back side for the d-ring mount to pase through. this allows the mount the to be welded all the way around on both sides of the tube and all around the rear of the mount to the main plate

bill demands that i not cut the tube :lecture: and i think he has a really good point. but welding to the front and back would be good too...

If your bumper is similiar to the one in the pic you could make something for the side plate but with those tubes the way they are make sure they dont get in the way of attaching and pulling. You could try on the front tube by the connecting points but I would weld a flat plate across the top connecting the front tube and the back one, which could be used for winch later.

it already has a winch cradle...

my plan was to weld a D-ring tab custom created by myself out of 1" plate (that i got free at work today) to a section of 2" ID tube and weld that just slightly outboard of the 4 corners... this would give me plenty of weld area to the tube of the bumper, and i'd be able to get awesome penetration to the tab itself (even through the back) because it wouldn't be on the bumper at that point. now i just need like 3" of 2" ID tube or pipe.

my other thoughts were using something in the same manner that that tow hook is, but my biggest concern was binding under side loading and we all know that's bad.

if i get bored later, i'll make a 3D model...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

so i didn't get bored, but i made a 3D model. green is the bumper tubing, red is the tube i'd weld to the back of the dring and to the bumper, and blue is the D-ring. it gives me plenty of weld surface...

Haha! I never demanded anything. It was purely a suggestion as I think it would severally weaken the tube if you cut it.

Looks like a good plan, but I'm not sure the red section is necessary, couldn't hurt.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i dont personally dont trust a face mount d-ring mount. i perfer to have it mount throuhg the bumper, although u seem to have a solid design. make sure on the 2" tube to weld all around the edge and drill a couple for holes for spot welds

yeah that was pretty much the plan. i could probably run some FEA on it... maybe i will, with a few different designs.

the reason for the red was to increase the weld area, fwiw.

why isn't this more simple :banghead:

Welcome to my over-thought-out world.

Seriously, I really think you are putting to much into this. Weld it up good and you should be fine with the design you posted.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

did you make the model in solidworks or proE"? I have a functional copy of ANSYS on my computer at home and could probably see what kind of stresses it sees at around 10,000lbs of a pull if you send me an IGES file. just make sure to include the welds in the model itself since i dont know how to include them into ansys alone.

anyways i have a new lower radiator hose as of today! whoot now hopefully my front end won't be puking coolant everywhere. PITA though, and my front skid is now in my trunk since we dind't have time to put it back on after doing the hose.

btw, antifreeze hitting you in the face for an hour straight wrestling with the skid and hose is fun stuff. i should use it as shampoo too, i got so much in my hair

ok... HEY EVERYONE. i'm going to try to start a build thread today while i'm bored at work for my front 44, designing/building a 3 link, chopping it/grafting an MJ cab section, and caging it.

I NEED SUGGESTIONS!! i can't think of anything that sounds good currently :geek:
