Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread
I think it would be fun to forge my own knife from scratch. It would probably come out like poop though.
I tried machining one out of a piece of 1.5" x 0.25" cold-rolled flat stock. I set it in a mill and tilted the head a few degrees, and basically just machined a knife edge into it. I left a tiny flat between the edges to finish on a stone, and then I heat-treated and carbon-quenched the whole thing to case-harden it.
The handle was fun too, I drew it up as two halves in Pro/E and ran it on our school's small CNC machine. Used two small pieces of aluminum for that.
Turns out the knife didn't hold an edge worth a damn and was basically useless after I tried to cut one piece of wire with it. I've still got it as a paper weight somewhere.

Never had it, honestly had to look it up to see what it was. I don't think I'd like it.
Am I the only one that constantly thinks about what to do next to my MJ and doesn't even consider side projects until it's done?
Nope, if I've got my XJ in the shop to do something, I'm in complete project-manager mode to get it done. Like I won't start working on it unless I know I have parts coming when I need them, etc. And if I know it's gonna sit immobile for a while - like after the last race, where I had to rebuild the rear shocks, front kingpins, etc - I'll usually arrange a spot for it to sit outside so it's not blocking anyone else's work.
My friend who actually owns the shop is the complete opposite. At any given time he's got piles of unfinished projects everywhere and never gets anything done. He'll be in the middle of working on something, then suddenly get an idea about something else and abandon the first thing.
I can't really say anything, as it's his shop, but I always hope that my work methods rub off on him a little bit. That's also why I work the way I do - because I see how little he actually gets accomplished, and I want to minimize the time I spend taking up space.
