Yeah, this won't be loud at all.

And I was really hoping to find this broken. I guess its time to pull the locker apart and see how bad it is.. apparently its out of warranty. ;)

Honestly it isn't much louder than mine is and I'm glad that shit was already broke by the time I drove that junker. :looser:
Fun weekend none the less.

Don't let the Engine see the broken parts.

It's getting scared.

:scared:

Dana 54 time?

EDIT: Jantz Engineering makes a Dana 54 kit for HP44 axles only.
The "K4" kit would go in a rear axle, stuffing JKD44 gears into a regular 44 housing.

So...

K4 time?

This is the HP 44 front, but after going through the install steps in detail, we have opted against the Dana 54 kit. The part where you have to epoxy a pinion adapter race in...

After really tearing into the front end (pictures coming) this is all because of our accident last year. I still think the HP44 is strong enough.

So Richard and I hung out for the first time in too long this last weekend, and pulled the front end apart.

First we checked the pattern on the ring gear, which for the most part looks pretty good. The 'pits' you see on the inside edge of the teeth is just a shadow, they arent actually there.

About 10 teeth after the broken ones were *really* hammered though. Clearly deflection happening here..

To quote Eric Filar "that ring gear looks worn. you shouldnt use it."

So we pop'ed the ring gear off and found the bolts that hold the two locker halfs together are backed out on that side of the locker..

That's strange..

Yukon warned me to be careful splitting the locker, as its spring loaded.

Removed the bolts, and it pop'd up a little. That wasn't so bad.

And then...

I touched it and the top half of the locker went flying like a Jack-In-The-Box

SURPRISE!

Start pulling parts out one at a time. I've never been into a Grizzly before, way beefier parts than a detroit.

As far as I can tell, when we were hit and the knuckle broke, the shaft slammed into the side of the locker and broke the drive gear, bending the thrust washer inward. I'm guessing this led to the locker halves loosening up, then deflection, and a broken ring gear in short order.

A quick call to our friends at Yukon, and I have locker parts, gears and an install kit on the way. Gonna put it back together the way it was.

If the locker were totally toast, we'd probably revisit the J54 kit again.. but I'm not buying another locker if I can avoid it. :)
