SYE / Work Day

Over the past 2 years I have read many many threads on here about working on my jeep. Ive done my own lift, track bar, disk brake swap, headlights, shims, headliner, blinkers and a few other things. This forum has been an incredible resource. But I think I might be over my head on my next project. I just picked up a true SYE as I still have drive line vibrations. I don't think I am quite ok doing this job on my own.

So I am asking if any other XJ owners around the atlanta area would be willing to come show me how to swap this thing out. I have a garage with 2 space heaters. I can throw in food/beer/some cash if necessary. I have a decent collection of tools I have assembled from working on many a jeep. (We have 6 XJs in the extended family now.) I am in Johns Creek, so North East of Atlanta.

I would like to get this done one weekend this or next month sometime. So anyone want to get their hands dirty?

I'd love to help you if I were closer, but I'm not.

It really isn't that difficult should you decide to do it yourself. I've done 2 of them now. Both while they were still under the Jeep. If you haven't visited the AA SYE page, there is a very informative video there of how to do one. Check it out:

The most important tool to have is a pair of good flat snap ring pliers. Getting the rings on and off are the hardest part of the job.

Good luck!

Agreed on the snap ring pliers. Or be really good/careful with your flat head screw drivers if you don't have a set of pliers.

I installed an AA SYE this summer as well, only I had the case out on the bench. Wasn't difficult at all. The video on their site is a good guide, but I ran into a couple small issues following their video step by step. Here's my thread of how it went:

Bring it over to my house, we can do it on the lift in about 1.5 hours. I have to do one on my DD as well, it can be an SYE install day.

Seriously, let me know. Ive done 4 of them.

Let me know a day...... I might me be down to turn a wrench....or eat :D

Michael, I will post up here tonight to confirm, but im thinking Feb. 2nd (Saturday) is the first weekend I have open for it. I have Country Fried Weekend (which you should consider coming to...) on the 18/19 weekend, then my daughters birthday the next weekend.

All are welcome to come over for a shop party, with the understanding that the SYE installs are priority, then the lift/shop will be open to anyone else needing to do work. Mark, drag Ed down here with ya!

I have a Rubicon Express Slip Yoke Eliminator kit also have have not installed it as im nervous as messing up my dd

Assuming you're talking about the hack n tap kit, those aren't bad to install either. The trick that really helps that process is to cut the output shaft while it's spinning in reverse, and to cut the shaft in increments with cool-down periods worked in so that you don't accidentally overheat and warp the shaft.

A helper to sit in the Jeep and take it in and out of gear for you really helps speed things up.

hm, we picked the one weekend I can't do it. I have a show that weekend. What about the next one? The 9th/10th.

Country Fried Weekend looks like a good time. Does anyone have a link to an event page with more information?

Michael, I can do the 9th. We can also do the hackntap if you wanna make the trek down from TN! Lets lock in the date and time....

Micheal, check the SEC page for CFW info, im about to drag up the thread from the dead.

another trip to the Garage Mahal.... pick a weekend I'm not working.:viking:

Stump,
I really need to get this done as my driveline noise is louder now that Im running the 265's.
Not sure when I could but that would be fun to knock out several jeep projects.

I'll drive down when ever you agree on the weekend from Smyrna, TN. Have a hack an tap to put on an if nothing else would like to see it done first.

Sorry man, we are attending two birthday parties on the 10th. Hope you can still squeeze it in. If it doesnt work out for you though, you are close enough that we could plan another day/evening to do it. No problem.
