Well it's that time of year again, summer is here and it's time for some trips to the beutiful high Sierras!
This years run(5th or 6th annual?) has been moved up a few weeks and we'll start the trail on Friday morning July 16th. I figgure we'll run it the same way we did last year, starting the trail near Dinkey Creek, and staying two nights at Grouse lake. For those that are up for it we can run Bald Mountain on Sunday as we'll be driving right by the trail head on our way out on Rock Creek RD. Hopefully the weather will be a little kinder to us this year.

Minimum equipment for this run is a locker or good limited slip, 31's, and rock rails, along with all the standard NAXJA minimums.

Here are some directions that I copied from Goatman's post last year...
Take Hwy 168 heading NE out of Fresno/Clovis, towards Shaver Lake and Huntington Lake. If you're coming from the south, exit Hwy 99 at Kingsburg and go north until you reach Hwy 168 (about 30 miles), then make a right. If you're coming from the north, exit Hwy 99 at Herndon, and drive all the way through town, then bear left onto Hwy 168. The new freeway through Fresno turns into Hwy 168, so you can take it off either Hwy 99 from the north or Hwy 41 from the south, if you want.
So, heading NE on Hwy 168, follow the signs to Shaver Lake, which is roughly an hour drive from Fresno. As you are coming into the town of Shaver Lake, make a right turn onto Dinkey Creek Rd, where there will be a sign saying Wishon and Courtright Reserviors. Continue on Dinkey Creek Rd for around 15-20 miles, and as you are coming into Dinkey Creek, look for another sign saying Wishon and Courtright Reserviors. Make a right turn at this sign onto McKinley Grove Rd......very important! If you miss this right turn, you will drive past the ranger station and the Dinkey Creek store and end up at Dinkey Campground. After making the right turn onto McKinley Grove Rd, immediately crossing the Dinkey Creek bridge, go for about 1/4 mile and look for the Camp Fresno sign on the left. At this sign, there are two roads that go to the left, the first cuts back sharply and goes to Camp Fresno, the second is road 10S36. Turn left onto 10S36 and immediately turn right into the trees, which is our camping spot.

This is not a developed campsite, so there are no fees or facilities, but bathrooms are close at the ranger station or at the picnic area next to Dinkey Creek. If you can, bring a little firewood.

I plan on being there although I'll probably come in on Sat. morning & meet you guys at Grouse. If anyone else is planning or wanting to go, but can't leave untill Sat. than let me know. We can meet & head in together.

Matt

I think I will be doing the same. I am planning on coming down early Sat morning from the bay area. But depending on drive time I might go down late friday night and maybe stay at a hotel nearby, then meet up with someone for the drive in. I have never been there so I would like to follow someone to the trailhead and campground. Looking for a little planning help right now to see what would be better to do.

I'll have to OK it with the boss, but I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem if those of you from out of town want to crash at our place & head up the hill Sat. morning.

Matt

I think I want to make this run, but would be another of the Saturday morning group. If crashing at the farm is approved, I'd like to join that too.

I'll try to make it too. Wow your place is really filling up fast Matt. What is your address. Did the boss give you the o.k?

I've got the time off. We'll probably be there late thursday.

Of course I'll be there.

Swamp owns my azz every year. Two years ago, broken frame. Last year, frame cracks everywhere, and an almost rollover on Hollywood Hill.

Hopefully, no need fro the 100 foot tarp this year.

So is the trail pretty hardcore or do you just like showing off???
Is it as technical as the con/fordyce etc? I hope to join you guys.

The boss gave the OK for NAXJA's invasion of the ranch. For those of us that are working stiffs & can't just take off in the middle of the week for a wheeling trip the ranch will be open. We'll get the BBQ warmed up & stroke up a camp fire Friday evening. We'll pack up & leave for Swamp Lake early Sat. morning & meet up with everone else at Grouse Lake for another night of camp fire thrills. I'll post directions as the time gets closer.

Thanks Matt, your the best. I can bring some food like burgers, brats or something or potatoe salad, etc. How would you rate this trail compared to the Rubicon/Fordyce and such?
Troy

For the most part it is comparable to Rubicon. There aren't as many places to play & be stupid like Rubicon, but the scenery & general trail running is close. As said above 31" tires & one locker is recomended with rocker protection. If you've got at least this there will be no problem getting you through. We've taken lesser equipped rigs through. CRASH is the king of dumbfest & will hold that title for as long as he lives.

I enjoy displaying my cavalier attitude for your enjoyment.

And your dumb ass followed me up the obstacle that hosed my frame, remember? ;)

Swamp is also the trail that cemented my wifes position as the biggest shiit talker in the Sierra Chapter.....nothing like a box of wine around the campfire to get her fired up!

And then I look at my calendar, and realize that I'm out. Prior commitment.

Thurs PM? We're leaving Friday morning, Matt and the rest of the bunch are leaving Sat morning. Lee, you should just be coming up to Dinkey if you're coming up Thursday evening.

My last (only) run up there was two years ago. We had the Mexican food potluck up at Grouse that night. Are we gonna do something like that again or just byo food? I plan to be up there Thurs afternoon, depending on when I get away from the Bay area. Maybe this time I'll get thru this trail w/o blowing a power steering hose or popping my tire off the bead:dunno: .
