I recently purchased a 309 Craftsman piece set and a Homak 3-Drawer box. All of the sockets are loose and I am looking for ideas on getting them organized. I looked at rails, but it will get a bit pricy for 178 sockets. thanks in advance.

I have a similar setup, albeit a differant cart... and after about 6 years wrenching on my jeeps frequently, Ive developed a system I THINK works quite well...

I have a metric shit tonne of loose sockets, and open end wrenches, many of them 3 generation old craftsmen, many of them duplicates, or slight variations, so ive given up on organizing them, they stay in seperate containers for when I need them.

I do 75% of my wrenching out of a 99peice husky wrachet/open end set, as it has MOST of what i will need when working on minor repairs, and its very convienient to take the whole case down to the jeep at the street. I can open the case, and find any size socket in 2 seconds... When the case gets old, and doesnt quite grasp the sockets so well anymore, i retire them to jeep duty(I've got the same set in all 3 jeeps)

Whenever i wrench at a friends house, it allways starts out using his sockets/etc, then within 20 minutes, i get so damn tired of looking for the socket I need, that i goto my car and get my socket set, and appreciate the system Ive got at home.

I just do not like those socket rails.... heres a link to the socket set i use... I started out on like the 69peice set, but it skips too many sizes, which annoys the crap out of me.

Hope this helps, happy wrenching.

I use one of these... http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...&keyword=husky+bag&storeId=10051#.UNzimHe8rY0

I can fit basically my entire tool collection in there if I'm careful, aside from a stack of blow molded cases for special tools like balljoint presses and GM steering wheel removers... and that bag is sturdy enough to stand up to being hauled around the junkyard for several months before the pockets start to tear open.

Mine weighs somewhere between 80 and 90lbs (comparing to an NP231 @ around 70, anyways) and it handled it no problem for 6 months being bounced around the back of the MJ, hauled to the junkyard, slid across gravel, anything and everything.

I have used a number of different systems over the past 45 years, but my two favorites for sockets have been the Hansen trays and the Magna Caddys/Mechanics Time Saver holders.

Note: I am either OCD or Anal Retentive when it comes to having my tools in the right place. Maybe both.

For wrenches I like to use racks like Protoco's WrenchRack.

Portability isn't a big deal for me as my main tool box combo mostly holds tweak specialty tools and diagnostic equipment, and I work out of my rolling cart.
