Student financial aid/healthcare

I am a firm believer that ones own ass is his/her own responsibility. Having said that, I am ironically disappointed by my inability to get on medicaid.

Here is the story.

I was gainfully employed as an electronics technician in the offshore oil/gas industry for 5 years and had worked my way up to the number one field tech position. The money was ok, but the work was rapidly taking its toll on my body.

I got married and all was well, until my parents offered me a chance to return to College. They would allow myself, wife, and child to stay in one of their rent homes rent free and pay my tuition. So we took the chance and here we are.

The issue of health insurance came up, and we decided that we'd better have some. So I called for a quote and the final estimate for 2 non-smoking adults and our child was $650/month for a total of $7800/year.

Application to medicaid was a rational next step, because my yearly income while I am in school is limited to about $10000. Apparently that is too much income to qualify for assistance.

Then, somehow the only student aid I qualify for is unsubsidized student loans to cover tuition only with a grand total of $3500 a year.

I am appaled by the governments unwillingness to help someone make themselves more gainfully employable, and thereby increase their own tax revenue in the long run.

anyone have any Ideas/similar experiences?

Why is our government content to propigate poverty, and deny assistance to those who will end up paying dividends to the public on the investment?

You're just TRYING to open a can of worms - aren't you?

:twak:

Go watch football or something!

Because they would rather have 25 million low earning tax payers then 10 million educated smart taxpayers... declare youself a minority of somekind [little native american blood in there somewhere maybe] or illegal immigrant. Besides, if they financed education and healthcare here they would not have enough to give away to all those other countries in foreign aid...

One of you should get a little crap job that offers benefits to part timers, say like at Wal-Mart or Target, and work the minimum hours required to cover the insurance. Sucks, but it's better than making the rest of us pay for your insurance. Lordy, Vaughnshillandale and her 6 childrens don't be needin no compotition fo da tax money of us workin folk.

*You* want to change jobs and get an education etc.... and you want US to pay for your medical crap and school? No thanks. There is a reason it is difficult to get... and this is proof: You HAD a job that you say paid well, but YOU made a decision to be a burden to the taxpayer. Simple enough IMHO... your choice, suck it up and pay it. :)

Here is a tip: Join the Military and work for it, or go to prison and do it in your spare time.

Cheers.

thats just it though, I have already dumped thousands into the system, shouldn't I be nearer the top of the list. than Juan or Shacondarikananisha who are leeching off the system, driving Escalades that they've "put in someone elses name", and using food stamps to buy ribeyes then pulling out $100 bills for the case of malted beverage.

I can't work and go to school at the same time, and succeed. I tried it a few times. Last 2 semesters not working I have a 3.4. Prior to that I had tried to work my way through school and had a cumulative 1.9. now I am working 8 hours a week, which is about all I can allow myself and still make decent grades.

She'll go to work as soon as she can find a job that will pay to work. Offsetting the costs of daycare, and fuel mandate a job that pays better than min wage. and I am able to work enough during semester beraks to just barely squeeze through a semester.

See, now I think you are just trying to stir the pot with racist generalizations. Not very cool. That is not what this club or forum are about. I suggest you try JU for symapthy on that.

oh and BTW I did the military thing... only one problem, I went active duty. I had no Idea that the education benefits were not even 1/10th that of someone who went into the national guard!!, and I had to pay 180 bucks a month for my first ten months to even get the benefit of the G.I bill. which BTW was a whopping $10k (enough for 2 semesters). that I never got because the military has no sense of humor, and sent me home on a general discharge/ honorable conditions 7 months into my service.

and i have never been arrested.

so you can take Military, and jail, and...

you are right, I should not have brought in racial stereotypes, even if they were personally observed. I don't want to muck this up with racist comments that cloud the issue and provoke irrational and defensive reactions.

I was never an officer, I apologize for using that term once. :D I did, however, enforce laws! I even wrote a couple of tickets and got to testify in court! Was at the same time you were riding your bicycle around the island with a 3lb ABC giving the neighbors a hard time for having a BBQ. :D:D:D
