93 XJ AC Temperature Sensor

Hello, I am rebuilding a 93 XJ. I am in the process of replacing the heater core and AC evaporator. Got everything apart and the new evaporator does not match the old, particularly with the a provision for the temperature probe to be installed. I searched around and this apparently is not uncommon.
When I pulled the probe out of the original evaporator the wires came out of it and the copper probe stayed in the evaporator. The wires didn't look damaged, the insulation and everything was still intact. I was able to pull the copper probe piece from the evaporator and reinstall it to the whole assembly. I guess these temperature probes are now unobtanium, I've searched and searched and came up empty.
I checked the resistance across all the terminals and got nothing, so now I'm wondering if even works. Since it's a three wire connector, does it have to to be energized to register anything? I am hoping to be able to reinstall this adjacent to the new evaporator. My understanding is this probe and harness is what controls the compressor. I'm really wanting to have AC back in this thing, and I'm worried about reinstalling all of this just to have the AC not work. Does anyone have any understanding of this probe or an alternative for these older XJs? Thanks
