often I keep realizing that after driving for a while the coolant will spit coolant out of the overflow bottle my lower hose for the thing is covered in coolant from happening so often why does it keep spitting up coolant am i puttig too much in?
I try to keep the coolant topped off when ever te overflow bottle look low because of my small leak from the hole in the block by by the t- housing
I need some help with this guys being that i work and this is my everyday driver
I have someone willing to sell me the head to the block for 150 so when i get that ill do a head gasket change so i wont have to worry about that small leak anymore

1. Fix the leak in the block (or t-stat housing)
2. You probably need a new bottle and cap. If it leaks, it's not holding pressure and boiling out.
3. Get the air out of the system
4. Punctuation

come on guys i need a little more help this jeep overheated on me today on my way home from work, and when I say overheated, man it overheated. It was over the limit someone told me my car was smoking I look and all the coolant was on the floor by my passenger wheel. A puddle too., wow was i scared. I then lift up the hood and noticed that it was bubbling, hissing, and spitting out coolant especially when i would turn the cap on the bottle. Guys i work so this is my everyday vehicle and i cant move around without it, not even to gets parts so i need some remedies that would help to drive even while things arent working to well if thats possible!!!!
I only recently change the T-stat and it was supposed to be a fail proof t-stat its supposed to stay open id it fails so coolant can still flow! But who knows with these aftermarket parts. Does anybody run there cherokee without a t-stat during the summer last summer that worked for me? but i dont want to do anything that will harm my jeep anymore than i already do driving around.
I plan on fixing the leak in the block when i get a chance to buy the head to this engine then i just swap it out because im not sure i can tap and tie the whole right!
as far as air in the system i drilled to holes in my t-stat? I thought that was to help burp the system easier? please help guys

What on earth would make you think you can keep driving with it smoking and boiling coolant everywhere? It's not going to fix itself! Stop putting band-aids on it and fix it. Don't run without a T-stat.....it's obvious from your posts that you really don't know what you're doing. Here's my suggestions:

1. Take the car to a reputable shop that know's what they're doing....or....

2. Sell the vehicle and get something more reliable that you don't have to try and work on yourself.

Just any little more about the ride home: after it overheated i pulled over and let it cool down then i added straight coolant. Not the 50/50 and once it cooled attempted to drive home. It over heated again within 3 block or so maybe 4 and i had to pull over. I let it cool added some orange coolant some guy gave me coolant on full antifreeze n the orange stuff its suppose to be better!!! Once it stop bubbling and stuff i added coolant and started the car it was back at normal temps I didnt have alot of coolant so i filled what i could and checked the temp it was 210 I closed the hood but left it cracked cuz more air gets in when i go fast. And Luckily I was able to make it home

STOP!!! Just take it to a shop already! Please, for the sake and future of that vehicle, take it to a shop!

Actually that no t-stat was something i did when i first started learning to fix my jeep at a mechanics request from a shop. I've been through alot with this jeep and Im not about to let a overheating problem have me throw it away or trust another mechanic.

I want to fix it I just dont have the money right now to buy anything new for my jeep i dont get paid till next week and i obviously have to get back n forth from work buses out here stop running by night time. (york, PA) i wasnt having this problem a day ago, and i been changed my t-stat.
so it must be a new problem and not something I messed with or wouldnt it started happening immediately? Sorry I need to ask so many questions but i do like to know what im talking about when my wife see's me taking the jeep apart, and wonders what the hell im doing.

Also i dont want to change the wrong thing and it keeps overheating but after reading on the topic I know that chance is even greater.
i bought a new water pump from auto zone in NY probably 2yrs ago Im hoping its not the pump already but i doubt it.. so i'm leaning towards the bottle and cap.

The leak by my t-stat housing is in the bottom hole for the t-stat I over tighten it once and it broke the hole some.
So the original bolt never would tighten, i tried every bolt I had. A mechanic friend from NY, put a tread of a bolt that fit, but cut the head off screwed the tread part into the hole nice and tight and slid the t-housing onto that thread and just screwed the top bolt in, and a nut around the threads for the bottom hole. It never leaked again until I changed the damn t-stat this summer. The damn thread wouldnt get tight in the hole on the block so thats where it leaks just drips of coolant at a time.

WOW....I give up..............

Yeah- I got nothing for you- besides I'm a professional wrench so you wouldn't trust me anyway.

Good luck!

X2....I love how he listens to his "mechanic friend" who by the way, jerry rigged his T-stat back together, but REFUSES to take it to a shop because he doesn't "trust" them.

Well dude, I don't trust you. I've tried being nice, and I know this is going to sound harsh, but you're a flipping idiot, and I wouldn't let you help me work on my bicycle. TAKE IT TO A SHOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!!!

Hey i didnt mean to offend anybody on NAXJA im not saying I dont trust you guys everything I ever accomplished on my jeep came from help from this site.
whys every body being so mean about me working on my jeep im a single father with 3 kids i work 40 hours a week all my money goes into rent. I dont have money for the shop!!! I have to fix it myself or I wont have a car to get to work. All I am saying about professionals is I had my bad share my first car was a pontiac all i did was put it in the shop when i lived in NYC and the day after getting it out my tranny broke a piece off of it, and my car was trashed, then the same shop wanted to much money to fix it. I could'nt afford it. So i decided with my jeep to fix it myself and learn while I do it. YES i have made a lot of mistakes with it but its still running because of this site and the help and advice I get from you! Take it easy

Nobody is faulting you for wanting to work on your own stuff but the problem is that you're not listening to the advice we are giving you an you want to do your own thing. So
people get fed up and sy the hell with you! If I'm being honest with you I don't know that you have the mechanical aptitude to even LEARN how to work on your own vehicle. You cannot continue to drive it, you've gotto find another means of transportation until this is fixed or you'll ruin the engine!

OK, cooling systems are pretty basic. They require pressure and flow. Air bubbles or a weak pump or clogged radiator interfere with flow, leaks prevent pressure.

Put a pressure tester on it, take it up to 18 psi. Find and fix the leaks. Verify good flow by looking in the return bottle. Check the radiator with an infrared temp gun, it should have an even drop in temperature from inlet to outlet. Fan clutch and electric fan are both helpful. Purge all the air out when you're done sealing it up.

That should get you in business. One more thing, coolant temperature sensors are designed to run in coolant, not air.. it's possible to have an air pocket around the thing and have the gauge show a safe temperature when actually the engine's about to pop.
