Steering upgrade questions

i had a question about steering upgrades. I want to beef up my steering linkage.

locally there is T&J performance which sells the currie HD steering for about 400 bucks.

but I want to convert to heim joints instead, because from what i've gathered they are stronger and easier to service than ball joints. Also i would like to go to cross over steering, and the Currie is the standard Y link.

so is there a cost effective way to get crossover steering with heims while retaining the stock knuckles? i figure if im gonna drop 4 bills on new linkage i better spend it right.

what do you suggest?

thanks
Dallas

enjoy changing your trackbar configuration for a crossover setup..

the currie kit is bolt in, and a lot of people run it, but i dont like the fact that the tie rod ends are propriatary, and the same size as stock. it doesnt require trackbar modifications.

the jcr system is near bolt in, no trackbar mods, and i run these.

damn, I was hoping for an easy swap in... what about the Ballistic setup with the chevy TRE? I assume you would have to make the hole bigger to fit the bigger TRE that be easy enough.

I would rather relocate the trackbar, It will allow for alot more droop. A bracket from JKS makes it real simple to do. From what I've read, the JCR devolps a "dead spot" and the drag link rotates on the tie rod.

How much lift are people running with the currie setup? I am at 5" in the front and I will be going up to 6" soon. The ZJ setup I have now binds if I go anywhere near full droop.

is the reason i would have to change the trackbar because of its angle in relation to the drag link? or do the two actually hit/interfere

It's not that big of a deal to relocate the track bar. If you're pulling 10" or less then the currie system will work fine, albeit overpriced and underbuilt IMO. If you ever plan on pulling real travel numbers the currie steering is going to bumpsteer like any inverted y setup will.

As for the JCR, they make excellent products, but as has been mentioned, the tie rod roll creates a dead spot that I would never want to have on a go fast vehicle.

im going to look further into the Ballistic Chevy setup, looks pretty beefy and its cheaper than Currie

Go with the heim setup, the inverted T with tie rods are going to roll just like the JCR system does.

Yeah, I really want Heim setup but I dont know much about steering setups and what needs to happen with different kinds, the Ballistic Heims looks good for the money, but I need to find out what needs to happen with my trackbar.. I have the RE extreme duty one.. im assuming I will have to get a new one?

it seems everyone bashes the jcr because of the tie rod roll, and to be honest i beleive MOST of this drama came out of a single thread...

ive got zero tie rod roll on my xj, and a friend is running it hard on his mj, both with zero complaints =\

as far as why you gotta re-locate the tracbar for crossover steering, the mismatched angles will cause massive bumpsteer, i dunno if its 'do-able' or not, as i havent ran it that way.

heim steering would be nice, but i just dont trust how it mounts single shear on stock xj knuckles. crossover would be nice on wj knuckles though (like anyone who's actually done WORK on a d30)

Have whoever is going to weld up the new mount build a new bar using the same drop bracket and same frame end joint, buy a new heim from Ruff Stuff for the axle side and you're set!

I'm assuming you meant roll. It's a legit concern! I can promise you I wouldn't want to deal with any tie rod roll, or worry about it in a quick maneuver type situation at any sort of speed, on or off the road.

Now, will it hold up? Hell yea it will, I was stupid enough to do most of the ish I did on STOCK steering, yea... stock. Again, I love JCR as a company, and what they represent, and for crawling, it would probably be more than sufficient, but I wouldn't take the chance personally.

i was allmost ready to buy the same setup, i didnt feel like messing w/ my trackbar, so i just went jcr. whenever i get around to re-gearing a d30 for up front (been running mismatched gears for allmost 2 years now, i am NOT a rock crawler!), i will probably go OTK trackbar mounting, then switch to a true crossover setup, but i find my jcr a good 'middle of the road' setup. =)

absolutely!

just fyi, i drive like a maniac on road, i normally see 90mph on socal freeways, quick maneuvers are a daily occurance.

i also run no sway bar, something even I have said is a stupid idea.

Awesome, thanks for the info guys, so basically for the trackbar it would just be a straight bar with two heim ends?
