Steel prices in Bay Area

Yeah i though so to but i must do funny math for a 10' piece they told me 94.50 plus tax no cuts. HUUUUU!!!!!

I dunno if you tried Sims in San Jose yet but I would. I paid about $60 for a piece of 7ft 3x5x.250 a few months ago. Cut it for free too.

Sounds like Ace junkyard in SF will close at the end of the year.
"The lease is up for Ace junkyard, a spot popular with artists, performers, Burning Man aficionados, and even reality TV producers."

The Mythbusters should buy that place!

Yo B.C. did you ever get your metal?
I got a price quote for 2 ten foot sticks of 1.25 .250 wall tube for $315.26 from Metal Supermarkets of Santa Clara and if I pick up, not dilivered!!!!

I am going to run to Sims for lunch tomorrow and hope for better pricing.

Didn't get it this week. The lowest price so far is around $10 a foot. Give me a call if they are close.

I got my junk almost all cut up and ready for the rockers. I still need to fix my rear driveshaft to get my junk mobile again though.

I may have what you need Bryan, let me go measure my left over box steel from my rockers.

I have 2 pieces, but they are only 4'3". I am not sure that is long enough for your rockers.

Looks like I will need around 11 feet. Each side measures out to about 5 ft 6 ins. The cheapest I have found so far is Alco in San Leandro, 20 ft for $182.

Thanks for checking Shannon.

That sounds like the best price so far. Quit loligagging, get some steel, and lets get your junk ready. Bring it over.
Mine should be done by Wednesday. ;)

Mine would have been done but B.C. came over yesterday and slowed me down!!!! Passenger seat is almost done . . . but now my break lights are lost!

Jes buy me some 1.25" .250 wall and I will pay you for your time and the tube!! (kind of like a job!)

And no I am not joking Jes!!

I am finished cutting one side completely, just need a little more cutting and I will be ready to start work on straightening the frame. Still a bit to do, but I made some good progress yesterday.

You still need help with your rear hard brake lines? I can cruise by one night this week if you do.

Went to Alco steel and iron in San Leandro today. Big place with a decent selection in the scrap yard. Found some steel tube for Letterman's steering links, but the guy wouldn't sell it to me because he was new and didn't know the pricing for that type of scrap steel.

I got a stick of 2" x 6" x 20' with 2 cuts for $200 and a few cents with tax. Not a bad deal at $10 a foot out the door. I still have about an 8' section that I have no real use for just yet. Might make a new rear bumper or something down the road.

Thanks for everyone's help.

That's what I got on there right now, but it is probably .250 thick. 2x4 box would be better, but all I got is 2x6. :gee:

I would prefer the smaller, thick walled box to a larger box with thinner walls. You're planning on having this box for a long time so you should be sure that it's the box you want and you are going to be happy. I am very satisfied with the box that I have gotten.
