Started gutting the XJ ..long way to go

mostlikly many many times stronger then stock by the looks of it i wouldnt even think of it having any issues. and in the US im sure there are no laws like that i could build my own tube framed car and as long as its "street legal" it doesnt matter who welded it or even if its held togeather by hot glue. but then if you take it some where and for some one to work on your frame in such a manor for them to legaly (not sure if its an acutal legal matter or just a liability reason) work on it they have to be certified.

this is my first major build so I'm learning as I go

ha ha thanks .. it might only see 5-6 miles on the pavement at a very slow speed

Its going to have a bed off a MJ on it and sectioned to fit ..the bed will be about 37-38 inches long.. Im trying to get a spare tire fuel cell tool box and cooler to fit back there with the cage ...

I"ll post some more pics soon. I'm not on here a lot I work 70-80 hrs a week

so where the plug welds are - was actually part of the unibody at one time..??
That is metal plate welded to the unibody frame. It is used to stiffen the unibody. The reason for the holes is to keep from burning through the stock metel or weakening the stock welds. The Unibody on stock XJ is pretty thin metal and transfer heat fast so it can warp and mess up factory welds. I seen it done in JP they were beefing up the unibody frame for a Jeepspeed XJ. Looks good so far.

a few new ones it almost rolls

Only thing I'd be worried about here...

is the shackle bottoming out on the back of the hanger box.

Looks good so far other than that.

yeah thats why I put the braces up a little higher I am really not sure how far back it can go and since it wont run I cant really tell yet so I left some room for a trim .. if I ever build another after this it should be a hell of a lot easier lol

looks good so far. two things to mention for constructive advice maybe.

All that work and you left a long over hang still? Why not let the frame end at the rear shackle box?

And as mentioned up there. That rear shackle box is way to forward I would bet. that is with no spring load right? If so once you put it under load and if you have a good quality leaf pack, I would guess that the spring eye will travel 6-8 rear, mine does. did you happen to change leafs from XJ ones, or did you measure out the stock spacing to make sure that its atleast no shorter then stock?

I measured a stock xj and put them the same distance apart .. I just made the back about 4" longer so all the shit will fit tools, spare tire, fuel cell etc

Wow maybe you have a extra long (longer then the typ longer) leaf pack? With no load on my Full traction 5" leafs and also on my Deavers, the leaf eye on both were about 4-5" forward of the frame hole. then under full flex I had to have boomerang shackles so that the shackles wouldnt hit the box.

oh its not 100% on the jack stands thats just as high as I wanted to make them

ok well maybe I am not being clear as to what I was saying cause theres no way you have any downward force (load) on those leafs and when you do and IF they are a quality pack, you should expect about 8-10" min travel from them. And I would guess that for almost every inch of up travel the rear spring eye will move about 3/4" rear if not more. Just keep that in mind, is all..

I get what ur saying ... I'll have to wait until my U-bolts and leaf plates show up to check that .....thanks

Yup im a dumbass I wrote the wrong measurement down :rattle: :smsoap: :flame: so had to take the plasma and remove them they go about 4" farther back .. oh well it happens

there 36x12.50-15 TSL

Very nice build! Update?
Let me get this straight. The leaf pack pictured is "for" an XJ ??
Did you place the rear boxes the stock dims from the front? or did you "relocate" for perfect shackle?

Very sweet rig BTW
