Can anyone tell me how the heck to get this:

wrapped around this??:

I just had my Rock Krawler X Factor Steering Kit (OTK installed) but the mechanic forgot to mount my steering stabilizer. I am trying to do it myself as it is a rather simple task. However, the bracket, as you saw in the picture, is 1/4" solid steel and I haven't figured out how to wrap it around the drag link yet. I tried prying it open with a small crowbar and a rod from a jack and I couldn't get it to spread for the life of me. The mechanic said that if I put it on the drag link and hit it with a hammer hard enough it would pop on there but that sounds about retarded to me. I'm thinking I might have to remove the drag link from the pitman arm and slide it on that way, but I have no clue how to unbolt them. Any ideas? :dunno:

Unbolt one of the ends of the draglink and slide it on (only way I can see doing it). You should be able to figure out how to unbolt it...

DING DING DING! ... i would take it back to the mechanic and tell him to do it, because he didnt properly finish the job... then again i wouldnt pay anyone to work on my rig. :confused1

youre going to have to get a bigger hammer and snap that thing on there like the mechanic said. it will snap over you just gotta give it some hammer lovin.... i wouldnt pay that guy either, what kind of job you think he did on anything else he worked on?

For real? I mean yeah its a big @ss drag link and I'm sure it can take a lickin' but hammering on it wont damage it? That's 350 bucks I'm hammering on. lol. Turthfully, the mech is a good guy and I know he can be trusted. He sponsors the local Jeep club I'm in and and gives us pretty decent discount on labor and parts. However, he can be a dick and he pissed me off so I took my stabilizer and decided to do it myself. The only reason I had him do it in the first place was because my wheel bearings and ball joints were destroyed. I had also ripped out the rear passenger side upper shock mount and it took quite a bit of fabrication to make it functional again. So since it was getting torn apart already, I just had him add in the steering kit and new shocks...new Pro Comp 33x12.50's cuz the old and busted tires from before were worn all funky from the bearings and joints being jacked up. It had some issues so I had it taken care of. Now that all of that is out of the way, I'm doing everything else myself.

Don't worry about it you don't need a fake stablizer on there anyways.
I'm confused, you mean this one?:

If you like the stabilizer, remove the draglink to put the bracket on. Make sure you position it just right. Mine put a little ding in my oil pan. That's when it ended up in the parts bin.

edit: oh. you'll have to drill out that bracket also.

MY XJ is my daily driver so I was hoping to have everything tightened back up for that "stock feel". I know that at this point I will never really get that, but I'm not a big fan of the road steer I have now without the stabilizer.

two things:
you'll have to drill out that bracket also
Is a half inch bolt the only thing strong enough to hold that bish together? A 3/8 fits right in there...

Steering stabilizers are junk
Explain...seriously I don't know. :dunno: Other people have told me that they would refuse to drive a lifted vehicle without one. Educate me. I don't think it would make sense to waste money on a hydro assist steering setup for a D30.

Most the lifted Jeeps I run with if still have stock steering run them but if after market steering then I don't see them. There on there as you said for your DD and to help elevate bump steer but look at the stock set up? It's crap. So when you upgrade to a stonger and stright axle tie rod it's not as bad as the y link set up so it's not as bad. But I guess that can very per jeep. Well if you ran it without and don't like it then sure add it. I'm not saying it dosen't help, just not something I've seen run after upgrade, nothing I will run and always told not to run. And it again depends on your jeep and set up.

To keep from hitting it with a large hammer you may try a large C-clamp and try to squeeze it on the rod. You probally won't get it the first try but I believe it would work.

I don't know why anybody would even try to hit it with a hammer, it would take all of what 30 minutes (max) to take apart the steering and slide it on.

Yeah I was thinking about unbolting it and sliding it on. I just worry about screwing up the alignment or something. I'm not a big fan of unbolting something that could possibly send me veering off into oncoming traffic while on the freeway.

Might try the c-clamp idea

Theres an easy solution to that aswell. Mark everything off before you start, if you dont have confidence in that then check the alignment when you are done. If it needs some adjusting then simply adjust it.

Removing the drag link wont effect toe,the worst case would be your steering off-center,and thats an easy fix!

Steering stabilizers are junk. Toss it, sell it frame it. Don't waste you time adding it on. Your Mech. left it off for a reason, not necessary.
