But it sure is fun reading some of these posts ... you can add a "barkeater" accent to some of these posts and laugh like hell.

How many posts does it take to understand that square driveshafts, though they work for a trail rig, are an equivalent to a log bumper?

Allow the king of cheap mods to chime in...

You can't beat a square DS when it comes to cheap can you?

Yes you can...

Either build one out of a scrap piece of DOM tubing or as someone earlier in the thread noted...

Figure out what length you need and hit a junkyard...

You want your u-joint to fail before the DS anyway...

Also, it would really suck to find out the difference in "glide factor" between square and round when wedged on a rock...

Nothing wrong when going cheap...

But you CAN go cheap AND smart...

edit: Ironic that this thread is in "Advanced Fabrication and Engineering" :D

square is stronger than DOM for starters

and the rock breaks real quick, so the "glide factor" is less for the square, cuz the rock is no longer there

i think its clear either you know what a square shaft is good for or you just blindly diss them as worthless or as a "log bumper", this debate is endless and going no where.

No problem bro, glad I could be of some good service to ya!

I just came back today to see 5 pages, 4.5 of them are arguments. Just refer back to the Cheap Jeep a few of us talked about. :-)

Good luck weeding through the BS... HAHA!

Do you have any clue...nevermind.

You're kidding, right?
I don't know what kind of "rocks" you're used to.
Hint: If your DS can move or break it, it's a "stone".

To me it's a very poor way to save a buck.
Gotta agree with that mean guy, CRASH; it's the definition of ghetto-fab.
First off, the tolerences between the inner and outer "shafts" would be loose at best. Bad Idea Jeans for a spinning part.
Second, get this thing spinning (banging) in the rocks and think of how long your u-joints are gonna last.

I'm all for cheap solutions but, like nakedness, there's good cheap and bad cheap.

Third, 88rockxj, you say you're in school, that tells me you have education at your disposal. Embrace the opportunity to learn.
Your grammar and spelling transcend bad. Reading your post was a workout.
CRASH called you on it. That'll happen when you type like that on an open forum. Get over it.
If you can't get over it, I would suggest a kinder, gentler location:

Brad - respectfully - you have no idea what tolerances and spinning things do in relationship to eachother...

obivously - you dont see the pure strength advantage of the 2 pieces of square tube

and - which cheap is nakedness?

Well, that says it all right there... While you're at it why even have a slip? Make your driveline just one solid tube. Than you don't have to worry about a traction bar...

Now, I don't mean to be a dick here but...I'm amazed at how much time you guys have spent justifying yourselves to people you don't know, all for the sake of being right. CRASH I know this will probably result in you cleverly bashing me, in such a way as too make youself look cool, thereby leaving me with no comeback. But...you seem like a real douche bag from reading this post. You could be a hell of a nice guy, but no one could know it from reading this thread. Do you really want to pigeon hole yourself like that? I can't wait for the day both of you guys show up for an NAXJA event, meet each other face to face, wheel together, become friends, then suddenly remember this conversation and think "WOW WE WERE BEING CHILDISH." I just hope I'm there, sharing my beer with both of you so I can see the looks on your faces. Lighten up guys. Let's all show up at the Rubicon next year and wheel together as brothers. We'll beat the pee out of our XJ's and I'll bring two spare driveshafts (one round and one square) in case either of you breaks yours! :p

shame shame shame!!!

On all you old timer NAXJA members!

For trying to direct someone with technical jargon...

I mean c'mon...

It's not like anyone here works in the metal industry or builds/sells aftermarket/modified parts for Cherokees right...

It's not like anyone here actually wheels and tests their theories and fabrications...

All of you are just jealous that none of you ever thought of using square tubing...

Don't even let me get started on the grammar/spelling issue...

It's downright rude of you to expect proper spelling or grammar from someone who needs to convey their ideas and/or requests in a written medium...

You're all a bunch of MEANIES!!!

:smootch: hope you fell better now Gil. We're not ALL MEANIES.

Yes...

Please stop upsetting those with radical new ideas...

For they will decide to not share them us...

Yes..

Those same tech hungry masses that clamor for sound tech and advice...

and those same masses that reject said advice and tech if it does not agree with their views...

Yes...

Please stop the insanity...

Embrace Darwin

Tell them what they want to hear...
