um usually guys run square d shafts in the front ( like i am on my cherokee on full widths) and if u have any bad a rig u will have manual hubs so u can drive u shit i the street. And there is no way you are gann a break the square d shaft except for u joints. and for that get some the are heat and freezed u joint and that have a liftetime warranty.

then lets see a pic of a broken square shaft, ive seen a million stock round shafts destroyed, never once seen or herd anything about a square shaft breaking beides u joints or the ears for the u joint not that actual square shaft. how many splines are on rockwell shafts? or an sm465 ?

I think the larger issue at hand is the appalling lack of fundamental spelling and grammar skills.

I need a translator to read some of these posts!

Oh no, we can't tell them they did something wrong. That might hurt their self esteem.

hahahah! i had trouble with that first one you quoted!
not that i expect perfect grammar, obviously, but come on! it should be readable.

bottom line, for the rear, it is never ok for a street driven rig. For the front, if you have selectable hubs and LOUD clanking, then go for it. Otherwise get a new shaft. I got my DS retubed with .250 wall DOM for $140, can't beat that. Another option is go down to PnP and figure out what length shaft you need and start measuring. If you are lucky, you can find one. I found my front DS this way.

if my poor grammar skills keep you from being able to understand what i meant then i think you are the one that needs some help, i was thinking about shop class while in english class.

On an episode of "Xtream Offroad" or whatever its called, (Spike TV I think the channel is... same channel that "Trucks!" with David Stacey is on...) they built the "Cheap Jeep" and used square tubing for the driveshaft. Then took it to Uwharrie National Forrest (if Im not mistaken, maybe Telico but Im pretty sure it was UNF..) and did the trails with it. Held up perfectly fine.

As they stated on the show, and should be obvious, its for a trail rig, not intended for DD or streets.

Thats all I have to contribute...

Wow, that certainly is an ignorant thing to type.

I never took shop class, yet I think my fab skills are barely acceptable by societal standards. ;)

P.S. Nothing says booty fab more than square driveshafts. For transferring torque, a round shaft is, pound for pound, the strongest shape known. Period. Anything else requires more material to achieve the same torsional strength, and thus becomes harder to balance, consequently placing tremendous loads on universal joints as they travel through their rotational paths.

Sounds good enough to give it a shot, worse comes to worse i'm out $20 and I have a spare driveshaft incase my good one brakes on the trail, why not?

Nice place, I showed off the underside of my XJ there.

Remember kids, spelling, punctuation and grammar are as important to web wheeling as seatbelts and roll cages are to real wheeling.

how is that ignorant? i was having a conversation/debate with another member of this message board about square drive shafts, and out of no where "crash" comes in and personaly attacks me by talking smack about my lack of grammar skills. now you come in here and call me ignorant for defending myself, you sir are the ignorant one along with "crash" who i used to think was a decent respectable person untill now.

can you understand that or do i need to put some more periods and commas in there for your high level of intelligence to understand?

Well, that was your first mistake. ;)

If CRASH picks on everyone about their written communication skills, is it really a personal attack? For crying out loud, communicating effectively is the message board equivalent to wearing deodorant. He's just letting you know that you have BO.

and yet your social skills are pathetic ,you disrespect people for no other reason then they have poor grammar skills. youre a pathetic person that attacks people on a personal level on the internet like a tough guy. i have been using a computer for around 5 years now and i cant for the life of me learn how to use all my fingers to type with so i use one finger on each hand, if i was to use commas and periods and use the shift button to capitalize my sentences i would be here all night, im sincerely sorry for any inconveniences i have caused you.

but onto the actual debate, yeah you are a round shape is pound for pound the strongest shape but guess what theres slip and splines involved. you therefore are transfering the torque load to the splines, a stock shaft with stock splines is no where near the strength of a square shaft which uses its shape as the splines unlike a round tube. some people dont have 200$ + to spend on a long travel drive shaft so they build a square one and its stronger then stock and it works. booty fab is something not strong and does not work worth a crap, where as a square shaft is strong and works fine.

take those "barely acceptable by societal standards" fab skills and fab up yourself the ability to see peoples opinions without being narrow minded and disrespectful.

Oh, I don't limit myself to criticizing just poor grammar and spelling!

I also enjoy criticizing:

Poor welding, bad ideas, inadequate design, inept execution, silly questions, antiquated technology, undersized drivetrain components, General Motors products, and leaf springs on the front of XJ's.

I know I'm forgetting something......

I love shoveling crap at Hinkley.

Loosen up 88rockXJ, you've got your panties wadded for no reason. So you're spelling and typing handicapped; all of us have shortcomings.

Just don't let a square-tubed driveshaft be one of them.
