Is there any way to determine if my '96 rear 8.25 axle is a 27 or 29 spline without taking the rear axle apart?

To be sure pull it apart.However this may help-----
Look on the axle between the brake and spring on the drivers side,what you hope to find is a plastic/paper tag wrapped around the axle tube,there is a code # on this tag which MAY help to determin(sp) the spline count
5206-9228,5206-9234 up to 5/15/95 -27 spline
5206-9604, 5206-9606 after 5/15/95 -27 spline
The axle in my 96 was a 5206-9603 -27 splne
Axles with the 5209 pre fix are 29 spline
This info was from the Dealers parts dept.

From what I've heard the 29 spline 8 1/4 were only used in XJs from '97-'01.

96 was the changeover year. my 96 has a 29 spline
