Speedometer intermittent, then quit

On my 92 Loredo, the speedometer would sometimes work fine and then sometimes not work at all. Now it has stopped working entirely. I searched here for anything on that but have not found anything. I have full instrument guages, so I am thinking this would be an electronic speedo. Thought I would ask before tearing things apart.:us:

My '98 does the same thing. I was so frustrated with it I hit the dash with my fist right above the speedo and BOOM - it started working again ! Bad ground or connection in the dash. Will be digging into it in about a week.

Good luck!

It IS an electronic speedo and the most likely cause is that the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) in the transfer case tailshaft has probably gone into retirement.

Ah hah, I think Dr. Dyno has found the problem, (or is it because I don't have a transfer case?). Sorry, I didn't specify that I have a 2wd with automatic trans. I did look at the speed sensor on the trans and it apears loose, at least as I would think it should not be able to spin around on its mounting. Am I correct in thinking it should be soldily mounted? The wires and connector look in good condition. I have not looked in the dash yet. Thanks for the replies. I'll post what I find when I do.

Speedometer, schmeedometer.....who cares how fast your goin'?
Off road, there's no speed limits....run as fast as you want, then stop...
or hit a rock, or go off a cliff...which ever...

Laugh a little...life's too short to be serious for too long ;)

Why do you think Jeep owners have that silly grin on their face while they're drivin'?

Since the sensor's loose, take it out and inspect it. There's a spindle in the middle that should look perfectly square with sharp edges when viewed end on. If the edges have worn away and the spindle has become rounded, the sensor's basically had it's day and you'll need a new one.

Well friends,

I removed and checked and re-installed the sensor. Found the drive was in good condition and turning all components. Still no speedometer. Drove it 3 times and no change. (That was last week) Just yesterday I was driving the XJ and looked down and it was working fine again. I touched nothing under the dash or any wiring, since checking the sensor (and that wiring and connector were clean and tight). This is baffling. I would discount the ground in the instrument cluster because the rest of the guages (Tach included) work good.

Our '91 had the same problem - after much poking and prodding of the dashboard and wiring, I replaced the VSS, which fixed the issue. It was so easy to replace that I felt a bit stupid for not doing it sooner.

My theory is that since the transfer case and trans were low on juice when I got the Jeep that perhaps this accelerated wear on the plastic gear. Was your Jeep in a similar state of disrepair?

oldebrush,

Any luck finding the gremlin because my 91 is experiencing similar problems. I had the speed sensor out weekend before last and it looked ok when I installed my SYE but it has just gotten worse since then.

Thanks

I have a similar problem with my '98. I will be driving down the road, then everything on the right side of the gauge panel goes out, and the air bag light comes on. I just push a little bit on the front right side of the panel, and everything goes back to normal.

I pulled the gauges out, and checked the connections (I thought it was a loose connection in the back.) Everything seemed fine. Put it back together…and it still does it. I'm gunna check the grounds next. The only other thing I can think of is the plugs in the back aren't making full contact. Not sure how to fix that since the gauges just slide in, and the plugs are stationary.
