I own a 01 and my speakers are BLOWN. I have two 10 in subs in my moms vehicle so i dont want those i just want to replace my factory ones with good hard hitting bass ones in the back and good all range ones in the front. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? THANKS!!!!!!
I just put in a set of Q-Logic Kick Panel speakers equipped with the Rockford Fosgate 6.5" component speakers. I found them on eBay as a "make offer" auction directly from Q-Logic. Shipping was included in the price and I got them for a reasonable price.
Considering I have a stock head unit (AM/FM, Cassette with single CD), the sound is very good. Now all I have to do is dump the shot rear stock speakers.
Do a search on eBay motors, Parts and Accessories for the kick panels. Last I saw they had a set for pre-97, but I imagine they will be running a set of 97 up in the not too distant future.
And, while you are doing audio and if you keep the speakers in the doors, you might as well replace the wires for the driver's side speaker as they tend to break. The dark green wire was broken in mine...
Sounds like you need to turn the volume down a little, save yourself some money. Then again, if it's too loud, you're too old. Right? LOL
Seriously though, I got a set of cheap Sony Xplodes and the sound is pretty good. If you're going to be doing hard hitting bass, you're going to be chasing down a lot of rattles (XJ's just aren't sound machines). So, dumping a lot of money into high end speakers will mean you need to dump a TON of money into Dynamat. Unless you don't care about sounding like you're a 16 year old kid who thinks he's cool just because he can be heard half a block away.
Nothing better than the sound of a rattling license plate to accompany the bass! BZZZ! BZZZ! BZZZ! LOL
hmm my 01 has the least rattle out of any car I've ever had. I have an mb quart 12" dual voice coil.. And polk audio db650's in the sound bar and front door.. They are marine speakers and when I flooded my interior the door ones were soaked in muddy water when I opened the door and they still work great! They don't make them anymore and I've heard the db651's aren't as good but the 650's can be found on ebay...
the only rattle I had was the back hatch until I tightened the rear hatch w those screw out rubber stops. Now I have to push in on gate before I open. But only rattle is rear license plate.. I've had plenty of cars where the plastic trim rattled to hell. The xj is solid..
I even ran into a guy locally that does audio bass competitions and he was talking about how great they were acoustically being small and squarish (those stupid scion shoe boxes were designed for audio and have similar shape). Anyway he was tellin me bout a local guy that wins alot that had an xj with interior stripped that you could see the roof bulge with the bass hits .and how he was gonna switch to a xj for his comp. Rig.. So I guess I disagree it's not a good sound machine.. However the stock wiring for all the speakers is kinda small.. And adding rear door speakers and a front tweeter makes all the difference itw
if yours is also a late model and all ralltley maybe you need to tighten up trim screws mine are nice and tight between doing my sueade headliner to pulling carpet to cut up to make removable . I made shure everything went back on tight as I never had rattles and didn't want any. Those couple of metal trim peices are what makes it fit so tight
on a side note if your serious about trail riding buy a small compact modular sub.. I'm taking my "nice" sub out and switching back to my infinity basslink 10" w integrated amp. So I can actually fit gear again!
I guess, you're right about the box shape of the XJ. I'm not a comp guy and my opinion is a little biased since I don't like hearing someone else's bass coming up the street, I miss my hearing and big bass is not good for anybody's ears.
The main basis for my opinion is the lack of sound proofing in the rig in stock form. The shape of the body may lend itself to good resonance from speakers but it doesn't block out road noise very well. I'm the kind of guy who loves to hear the whole symphony in a crystal clear way (and loud), not just the bass rattling my fillings out of my teeth!
Theoretically you can mount some little 6x9's in some boxes in the back, some decent components in the front and hook up an amp to run them. Had some 6x9's in boxes in my S10 and they'd hit hard enough to sound like an 8" sub. Lets you get some well-rounded, full music without sacrificing a grip of money and cargo space for some subs.

For a lil' bit of bass, I'd pick up an amplified 6.5" or 8" Bazooka Basstube. I had the 8" in my '66 Mustang and loved the sound that came from it. Plus, it all wrapped up in a hard case, so you don't have to worry too much when you pile junk in the back.

if your replacing stock, you won't get good bass from the rear speakers.
because of the way it's designed you'd be better off putting the speakers with better bass in the doors, and all range speakers in the rear.
other option is to add some tweeters to the little plastic triangles on the doors, right where the side mirrors are.
