Sound deading cab?

I am just getting started on building my 92 MJ. I always feel like I am riding in a tin can and listening to an 1960's am radio (although everything is aftermarket). What I would like to do is have the same (or as close as possible) interior noise level as my VW golf.
I am still on the fence about doing the 97up swap, going to look at a possible donor tomorrow. For tunes I plan on starting out fresh, new head unit/speakers/amp/wiring/ect.
For sound deading thinking of doing a combination of a spray on and dynamat style deadner. What works? Suggestions?

My plans are to build a driver (not daily driver but "adventure jeep", I won't use the over used term expedition...) so I want to make it as comfortable as I can.

I used FatMat in my XJ. Similar product to DynaMat, but less expensive. I picked it up on Ebay. I did the floor, roof, fenderwells and inside the doors. When I shut a door now it has a solid "thud" instead of sounding like someone banging a gong. Definitely not as quiet as some newer cars, but it did make a big difference in noise. My A/C works much better too due to the insulating properties of this stuff. That's important down here in the desert.

Another +1 for FatMat. Used it exactly as Brent did, but did it on my doors as well. Plan on doing the passenger area floorboard once I replace the carpet.

The heavy stick on rubber/asphalt sheets stop the vibration of panels. To really stop sound thick padding over the larger areas is needed.

they also break down in heat and release toxic fumes, and eventually harden and crumble off ;)

I have heard good things about lizard skin from the local hot/street rod guys. I am not at the point where I am ready to apply it but I am going to give it a try. I'll make sure to let everyone know my results.

build thread of the cage?

do you have any of your stock interior back in? Does your headliner go back in? If so how do you fit it in around the tube, and if not, do you just have the fatmatt exposed?

No build thread, but here's some newer pics. I cut the headliner in half to get it back in. Used an old headliner from the junkyard to make a pattern for all the cutouts, then cut mine. Made me nervous to cut it up, but it turned out ok.

that came out really good. never thought about sectioning the headliner. Is the cut in the middle noticeable at all? does it move or separate at all while driving or flexing it out?

Awesome workmanship!
