im not worried about shafts, i expect to break those. not too worried about ring and pinion either but it would be good to know. I've been fine on 35s for the last 3 years, of course even though i take it very easy on the skinny pedal for the most part- just went nuts on the 30 and went back to HP so I'm thinking 37s should be fine...

i just saw your vid on dalores. Thats crazy how little the the trutrac actually works. it seems to do a lot of unloading. I don't blame you for swapping it out asap. It looks like with that locker you'd rarely have the front two tires spinning and still snap a lot of shafts with the fierce unloading.

thats exactly why i want to get rid of it. when i ride the brakes and the gas pedal at the same time, it really loads up , so when it catches, it goes-not cool in my book- i prefer to creep slow with a full front locker. if i don't ride the brakes, it only locks when both tires are fully planted- and i only really need it when both tires are not fully planted.
flat out too unpredictable.
when i had the lock right in that LP30 it was very predictable and always gave me traction in the rocks. I got used to always being able to count on the front end. now i cant count on the front end. that sucks. and it seems to not work only in times when i actually need it to work. worst of both worlds.
ill be happy with the darn lock right up there. got a hardened cross shaft for it too.
 
You should look into the jana54 kit. Stuffs Dana 50 gears into a 44 housing.
 
yah i think i can hopefully build the front 60 for around 2400 , and the rear 14 bolt for under 1200. thats the plan for now. but ill be using stock shafts, rear spool, and a front locker...

im gonna wait until i can buy an entire f250 with a HP60 front for like 500$ and than part out the rest and get the axles for free that way.
until then i plan to run the front 30 on 35s with a locker, and finish up the standard cut 8.8 i have and throw a spool in it. it has a truss and c clip

Yeah, I just did the math, and I'm pretty sure I spent under $2k for all that stuff.

ive also decided that building up that 8.8 will actually cost more than i thought originally , even though i already have chromos, trussed housing, and gears, and a master install, i still need a cover, perches, u bolts, plates, shock tabs, and a locker of some sort, so ill just wait until i find that stuff cheap. i wish i didnt just sell that detroit. Dope. oh well. the hi 9 ring thingy will last on 35s for now...
 
Any progress on the cage? I've been holding a 4 ft stick of tube up around my jeep trying to figure out how it will go together. Can't wait to get an order in and get started!

Have you considered Ruffstuff or TNT U-bolt eliminators?
 
i have no desire to spend money on the rear setup since i plan to link it anyway. the only thing i am going to do is plate the leaf boxes a little more and call it good.
 
i think im going to keep the 8.8 gears, housing , and chromos for now and if i blow up the rear hi9 anytime soon i can throw in a full spool and some perches and shock tabs and have a super beefy spare rear end ready to go.
 
got alot of work done on the cage today. actually worked on it from 1:00-10:30. extremely hot out, hotter in the garage, even hotter welding in the garage...

got the B and C pillars done.
once you drill some 1.5" holes through the rood you know youre comitted to finishing fast, my goal to kick myself in the butt

got the halo etc mostly done. got alot done after the pic. the connecting bars to from the a, b, and c pillars down the middle are done as well, as well as started some traingulation. got alot done after this pic

also, i am using a angle grinder to notch all my tube, and it works great.
i actually prefer it, even though ive never used a notcher, a real notcher seems like a pain in the ass.

ive gotten to the point where the cuts are very clean and round, not always 100% symmetrical, but fit the tube good enough.

i have been doing 2 passes on every weld, one with 3/4 max heat to mock up, then full heat later on to really burn it in. Seems very strong.

i onyl have a 20amp breaker so the welder is constantly tripping the breaker plus the welder overheats alot and has to sit.


up next for tomorrow:

finish halo and triangulation up top(only one more piece for that)
drill out floor plates for b and c pillar to bolt through
B pillar internal cross bar
B pillar legs from below body to frame(bolt through floor to a plate, that is tied into frame with a leg. basically sandwhich)
paint everything up to that point

then weld up the halo the b and c pillars
A pillars(extrenal) (2 bends in each)
once a pillars are done then ill do the cowl cross bar
then paint all that

if i have some tube left i want to start a floor cage, and more internal triangulation, and maybe a external D pillar that ties into the rear bumper but hugs the body real well

and build some flared tube for the front fenders.
 
Just noticed that it was 104* degrees on saturday, no wonder welding, cutting and grinding all day from noon to 10:30pm completely wore me out- I'm sure it was hotter in full welding gear stuck in the tiny one car garage. Sunday wasn't as bad , only 96*, but i was pretty sluggish after going out drinking saturday night.
 
thinking about turning the hi9 into my new front end, after i swap in the ford 8.8 with chromos and a spool/truss/4.88s in the rear. i think i could call the axles done for a little while then...like just have a shop like WFO retube the thing over the winter.
