Actually, it happened a number of times before I got it all figured out. The floor had rusted through above the muffler, and the muffler got shoved through the rusted out floor from banging on rocks.......which all wasn't good for the carpet and padding.

I ended up replating the floor, and still used some tin foil to insulate the carpet.
