rugged ridge steering??

If you were to do some goferit flip inserts with this kit and go OTK it could work well for you. As a bolt on, alot of people have complained of the TRE roll.
You can not flip the RR steering to OTK!

i just installed the rr setup this morning. everything went pretty good until i turned left and discovered that the tre from the drag link hits the right front tire when turning left. what a drag. outside of that the steering felt pretty tight, well better than the moog stuff that was on there.:smoker:

yea as the O.P of this thread I found out all I need to know about the RR setup...I'm steering clear of it(pun intended!!!).Guess I'll look into the zj setup....have heard too much negative about RR.Not to mention the whole back order thing pisses me off.

Keep in mind that wont be giving you cross over.

If your wheels have over 4.25" backspacing, be warned...

In my last post I asked the question what BS would be required for the right TRE to clear the tire. I did not get a reply, so I figued it out today. I am running 33" X 10.5" BFG ATs on stock alloy wheels. The manufactures' instructions say "with stock rims and oversize tires I may have a slight rubbing of of the TRE on the passenger side tire". SLIGHT RUBBING?? The tire is bound hard against the TRE at left turn!

I don't think there is any way a 215-75R15 tire on a stock rim would clear the right TRE at a full left turn! The caution in the instructions should leave out the part about oversize tires and should change "may" to "will". I believe the 215-75R15 is the smallest tire ever mounted on an XJ (other than the space saver spare) and this steering would not clear that.

To find out what BS would be needed to clear the TRE, I put a wheel spacer on the studs and stacked washers, just to see how far I would have to move the BS to clear the TRE. It looks like any BS over 4.25 will hit the tire!

I put the old ZJ steering up in the press to straighten it, then put it back on the XJ.

By the way guys, if you want this same kit with the straight rod end instead of the bent one, the YJ kit is the same only it has that straight rod end.

You guys should also talk to Avanteone on here, his shop offers a 1-ton system.

Will the straight rod end interfere with the right side coil bucket or track bar mount?

edit- re-read

It may, the bent version pushes it away from the trackbar mount, so that may be the reason.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but those links to the Tellico 4x4 site with the steering setup....that appears to be a crossover steering setup for a WJ or something where the tierod and draglink connect at 2 different spots on the passenger side knuckle.

I do not see anywhere on that tierod where the draglink would attach...

Unless it is just a generic picture?

I'm thinking about getting this kit, I read the ENTIRE thread, but I have a few questions.
I have 4 inches of lift and all my tie rod ends are shot and need to be replaced.
Wheels have 3.625 of back spacing. with 31" tires.

For those still running this kit and the poly or plastic spacer to limit the roll, how is it working for you?
I saw that another common comment was that the jam nuts would back off, I was thinking about using red locktite to hold it for a few days until I get a pro alignment done and then have them put a few tacks from the nuts to the DOM. a few seconds with a grinder and I can change a TRE if I need to.
It looks like the TRE's that come with this kit have the same thread size and pitch as the JCR 1 ton upgrade. Does anybody have accses to both kits to get a comparison of the lengths? When It comes time for bigger tires or more lift I can put the 1Ton TRE's from JCR and ream the knuckles and pitman arm:dunno:

Well I've ran it for 1 year... I haven't been happy with it for about 11 months.
I've got about 4K to 6K miles on it on a 4.5" lift with 32's and will be going back to the ZJ stuff in the garage. I had some spacers/bushings in there and have spit two out...
If you want to just strengthen things a little then go with the ZJ swap... if you want to spend more time & $$$ the other HD kits would probably be better...

What are the benefits of the Currie setup besides a larger diameter tie-rod? I myself am looking to upgrade to a heavier steering setup. Also, where is the cheapest to get it?

I have had this on since summer time, offroad I am very pleased with it, its onroad manners are a bit to get used to though. I havent tried a spacer yet, just kinda learned to drive with the "roll", kinda presteer every corner a bit. I'm going to try some spacers next monday, I'll post up what I think after. I have had no issue at all with anything coming loose, I used loctite on the threads for the jamnuts.

In response to the jam nuts backing off the Jam nuts on my Rusty's steering would back off. Then finally the slippery powder coating on the edges of the tierod and draglink wore away. Red loctite wouldn't even keep them tight. I think if you remove that powdercoating on the edge (where the jam nut tightens to) you will have less issues with it loosening up. Just because the powdercoating is really slippery and there isn't alot of tension between the paint and the jam nut.

My theory anyway.

I have this kit for about year now. (lift 5",Tires 32s, Rims 15"- 4.5" back spacing)
No jam nut problems at all. I have had all the grease boots get tore up and the steering tested your meddle at times. The spacers should come with this kit. Once in place it handles just fine.

I just got a set of Go-Fer-It over the knuckle steering inserts for the knuckles. Also I just got my MOOG tie-rod ends in the mail to replace the Rusty's ones.

Myfriend put the Go-Fer-It inserts in his XJ and it seems to pull the tierod end closer to the knuckle, reducing roll.

Also my MOOG tie-rod ends have an oval hole instead of a perfectly round hole like the tie-rod ends that Rusty ships their steering with. It makes sense that this would also reduce rolling by limiting the amount that the tierod end can roll back and forth.

Are we talking about the same kit here?
