Rubicon Trip this Summer

my dogs love going places with me, whenever i leave, they get all excited because they think they're going. however, i do not know if it's really the fact of being in the car, or not being away from me. i've only taken then wheeling once, and that was in the snow so they were super pumped just for that reason. will the weather be pretty cool up there? if it's going to be hot i may think twice about it, or fix my a/c.

another issue is it may be a PITA to keep them on leash. they typically dont go far off leash, but they will chase a rabbit, deer, bobcat, bear, mountain lion. i'd have to have someone hold the leash if i decide to take them out in a hairy section where rolling is a possibility, which could be a pain.

IMO leave the dog at home, especially if its not a Jeep dog thats use to rocky terrain. Plus its your first time on the 'con you want all hands on deck.

the dogs do pretty good in the car as far as bracing themselves, they're used to canyon carving with me in the mustang. they did ok wheeling in the snow too, and i was rallying pretty good. that part i'm not too worried about. they're really tough dogs. ideally i'd prefer to leave them home but that will cost me about 400-500 bucks, which after this jeep build is going to sting a bit.

buy 2 shock collars... done! no more worrying about them running off. ;)

i got one of the petsafe ones. works on the big dog set at like 3-4. i think the lil one likes it haha. tried shaving her neck and everything, all the does is twitch a lil and continues her shit, even set on 8. she's more obedient than the big one anyways, she's part shepherd and doesnt stray far from him or i.

Okay, the dates are definite!

August 13th-16th, leaving Loon Lake at 10am Monday the 13th.

Ocean_Jet reserved a group campsite at Red Fir campground for the 12th if you want to camp near the trail entrance the night before.

Here's the latest roll call...post up if your situation changes:

1. sdspearo
2. RedDevilGTO
3. Kensommers

4. Ocean_Jet (maybe)
5. Vanimal (maybe)
6. Webdog (maybe)
7. BossCherokee (maybe)
8. rockclimber (maybe)
9. 1990JEEPXJ (maybe)
I'll be in if I can get the front drive shaft welded up the rear one (my heavy duty one out of the V8 XJ) cut down (take the old for spare) and the rear axle shaft replaced (broke at Dish pan waterfalls when front shaft spun at the weld). I need to know if this is the definite date so I can plan the work out. August 13-16. OOPps sorry just read again the post. That is the etched in Rubicon stone date, got it! This weekend I have to replace upper and lower ball joints on my van's front axle. I'll replace the unibearing while I'm at it. I guess it's not just money this time it's time too!

officially in. the list of things to get the jeep ready is short enough.

I will probably go bankrupt, but I will be there.

also gonna be at sierrafest too.

now I need to figure out where I'm gonna camp. :D

In the Jeep, durr! :P

this. i didnt notice if you're taller than me, but i'm 6'2 200lbs and i fit just fine diagonally. i cut a piece of 3/8" plywood that makes the surface a little more flat and it really wasn't bad.

my jeep will be full of shit for wheeling and camping... not going to sleep in it.

and I am hoping to have a passenger as well.

1. Install Cage
2. Purchase hammock
3. Profit!

why hang a hammock from the cage when I can hang it from the millions of trees up there

i'm planning on a couple of totes or something that i can easily pull in and out. i travel light, typically.

question for anyone who's been there before, if i have 30 spline chromo shafts front and rear with 760's and full circle clips, should i bother with bringing spares? Maybe a stub and u joint? front and rear spare, or just fronts?

Yes, carry spares. On a long trail for multiple days, always have spares. I have alloys upfront so I always have my stock shafts as spares and at the time I had a 8.25 rear with alloys and I carried one spare shaft since it could be used on either side.

just figured it might be overkill if heeps on 31's are doing this trail. but you're right, just being lazy since i have no front spares yet.

you are more likely to break a shaft on 35"s than a jeep on 31"s...

I have chromos with CTMs up front, fully assembled chromo spares with 760s in the box, and full spares for the rear.
