Ross's Jeep that will take longer than Rob's to build thread...

I was looking for a clever way to mount my license plate last night and said to my self, self, you should have saved your rear hatch so you could cut it up and use as a rear panel.... Damn.

Now that I see yours I really wish I had.... Oh well, nice work man.

Well my ideas change too often, the whole cut hatch idea is old news now. I decided to cut a little more off, then I had another idea. Then I decided to cut even more off; if in doubt, just keep cutting stuff off. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves but the general idea is to dovetail the rear and sink the quarter panel skins into the tube, trying to keep it similar to the front. I've got Ken's old MJ tailgate which I'll be using just to cut the sheetmetal section with JEEP on it and transferring it over. The tailgate will not be functionally, instead. Shackle boxes are getting boxed in on top and welded to the bumper as well. Rear tube work will drop down and support it.

Heres an idea/mock up with the quarter skins in place.

Also got a new 7100 to replace the DS front I broke. Got some limit straps too finally. Lower tab is off the LCA/coil bracket, upper uses an extra factory bolt on the inside of the framerail just behind the frame engine brackets. I believe its for the factory 4cyl engine brackets.

Nice! Good idea on the mounting location for your straps, do you happen to know off hand what bolts those holes take off hand? Same as the 4.0 brackets?

Got the tube work done and all welded. Reused the bumper ends and tube I chopped off to redo around the wheelwell. Bent up the down bars and filled in the middle areas. Still gotta finish the quarter panel skins. Used Ken's old tailgate from the Dirty POS to cap off the back with a nice little touch. Gunna put a tube above the gas tank area for a spare tire mounts.

Your jeep is now capable of 120mph but will blow front axleshafts, driveshafts, and radiators if some throttle happy maniac gets in the drivers seat.

You gonna suck the rear bumper in?

I would have bent the top tube above the tail gate at each end to meet up with the side bar that runs across the upper body line.

Other than that not bad for a hack.

:D

I need a bench for all those times when we sit around on the trail.

The was as much useable/flat sheetmetal outta Ken's tailgate I could manage.

Other than that not bad for a hack.

:D

I just tossed everything together and welded it solid. I'm past the point of caring and just wing it now. I don't make mistakes, I practice things I won't do the next time around.

:D

Yeah, that tailgate had a rough life. At one point I dragged a complete balljoint ford 60 (with the rims and tires still on it) across it, I had to put it on the ground and jump on it a few times to get it to close again after that. It also had a completely unsecured 4.0 roll into it several times while I was driving. Most of the spotweld and pinch seams were torn open and/or bent and it took a really solid kick to get it to actually latch.

If it'd been even close to salvageable it'd still be on my truck. I'm glad to see it live on in another jeep instead of fetching 10 cents a pound at the scrapyard.

Finished up the dovetail stuff. Got a spare tire mount rigged up too, main support is removeable incase I need to remove the tank itself. I can still pull the pump and stuff with the bar in place. Also picked up some round lights for some simple brake lights. I still might go back and paint the letters JEEP with some silver or something, depends if I fell like it and ever get around to it.

And since I'm a bitch and didn't go wheeling this weekend, I got the jeep running again after sitting for a month or two and took it down back to make sure it still does dumb things.

I want to know more about that sweet WJ.
