Quick exhaust question

I will be doing a CHEAP exhaust upgrade within the next few weeks. I like the sound of a cherrybomb glasspack; especially for the price. i'm wondering if it would be better all around to keep my hollowed out cat on, or run a straight pipe to the glasspack.

1994 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L I6 HO

it will run better if you pick up a cheap high flow cat from summit for like $40. You will lose all the balls from the bottom end if you go completely open flow

The I6 runs much better with the back pressure from the cat.

Don't forget that not having a cat is illegal.

Get a high flow cat, and run straight pipe back from there.

Ouch. Well, I'll leave the flaming to others. For a cheap exhaust, I'm all about the cat and a nice cheap Dynomax (purchased when they run a steep discount) catback. I listened to a couple of clips of I6s with just a glasspack, and I wasn't a big fan. I like the Dynomax Turbo's sound, but opinions vary.

I recorded this because someone else asked, but here's mine. Don't think it's that loud, just that the camera's close to the tip.

It just sounds straight piped to me. I had mine straight piped for about two years and got tired of the sound, so I put a full stock exhaust back on it, now I want something with a little more sound. My buddy has a glasspack on his 4.0 and I like the sound of it. A lot of the Youtube videos make the glasspack sound really bad for some reason.

glasspacks are pretty raspy, I have one on my stroker, but it has been on there so long that I would hate to see how much of the filling is left.

Surprisingly enough, when they tested a bunch of mufflers, a strait through glasspack flowed the least of the bunch. I am a fan of the dynomax superturbo, or if you are set on a strait through muffler, a buddy has the ultra flow, which sounds nice. I have also heard good things about the flowmaster hushpowers.

See, I think it sounds a lot quieter than straight pipe, but vid off a camera isn't all that hot. Then again, I'm always in the Jeep, not behind it. With the hatch open, it does sound a lot different inside, I'll admit.

What was the other oddball muffler guys said sounded good on the Jeeps- Spintech?

compared to a normal muffler on the same application I think glasspacks always have more of a raspy sound to them. Mine does ok for what I needed. That mainly being that I needed something on there to drive and a glasspack was only $20. I will be rebuilding the exhaust all the way back and NOT using a glasspack. Pacesetter to 2.5" to high flow cat to Superturbo or Borla to 2.5" out the back.

My buddy's Borla sounds nice, very throaty and deep. He also has a cat. Us telling you to run a cat isn't entirely about being environmentally friendly, but more about legality and not being environmentally hostile.

I have a Flowmaster super 44 on mine (with cracked stock header) It sounds good for being cracked. I have a cat that just got replaced for free by the dealer. For that type of money its exactly what i expected it to be. I don't get very much in cab noise and it sounds great outside while driving. I Had a glass pack on my last jeep and it wasn't any where near what kind of sound i was looking for. It was real quiet. I must have needed a new cat. And one of my friends had one on his and it sounded pretty much stock.

Get a high flow cat, and a muffler of your choice.. From the sound of it you want a magnaflow/bullet performance 16" or a dynomax ultraflo.
