Maybe this thread should be in the tech section, but I felt I would get more relevant feedback from the SoCal peeps.
My XJ is a 97 with a 4.0. I was given a 91 engine that I'd like to rebuild to put into my 97 but before I shell out the cash for machine work, I wanted to run it over with you guys.
I know there were minor variations between the years, but for simplicity, let's just say I'm just only going to use the engine block and the cylinder head from the 91.
So..... assuming my XJ passes all functional tests, can the smog tech fail me for having an older block or cylinder head? And are you guys required to verify the casting numbers or date of manufacture as part of the smog test procedure? And given that the blocks and cyl heads are pretty much the same between the 97 and 91, is it something that I even need to worry about?
I know that in California, for non-oem engine swaps, the engine going in must be the same year or newer than the car it's going into. But not sure if that law applies in this case.
