Putting the new axels in this weekend

I'd put the jeep up on jackstands under the axles, tires off the ground, and see if you can duplicate the noise. If you can a (very careful) assistant could use a mechanic's stethoscope and pinpoint that sucker.

"grinding" from 40 to 50 sounds like driveline angles or bad driveshaft U joints to me. like driveline vibes.

Checking the front and remembering what Aaron said the front axel does not have any oil in it...............ddduuuuhhh
So question....How bad did I mess up by taking it for a two mile drive twice???

That depends on if you had the hubs locked or not. If you did have them locked, a two mile drive probably heated up the gears A LOT but whether or not it did any damage time will tell.

No the hubs were not lock and I opened up the differential and it did have oil in it. I thought when all the bolts holding the diff cover on were just hand tightened that I remembered Aaron saying he did not have oil in the D30 but there was so much going on when I picked up the axels that I got confused.

New oil in the D30 and Chy 8.25 with some Lube Guard add to both.

Seems when I turn the rear drive shaft that it twists about 2" in either direction. I am thinking that the pinion is not meeting the gear deep enough causing it to make noise when I accelerate and de-accelerate. Seems like the engaging of the drive shaft by pushing on the accelerator or when I take it off is what is making the noise.
What do you guys think?

are you in N or P or gear when you say the DS twists 2" ?

Grab the driveshaft and move it side to side to see if there is any play/movement. Check the U-Joints too. Start with the easy stuff before thinking about tearing into the rearend. Are you running a front shaft in the rear or stock one?

Stock rear drive shaft and the drive shaft does not move when push/pulled side to side.

U-Joints feel good when I play with them. They are tight not sloppy.

What do you think it could be?

When checking the rear gear set, I like to keep the rear wheels on the ground & chock them. Then, to elminate the driveshaft from the equation, I'll grip the pinion yoke. If possible, clean an area on both the pinion yoke and the housing - make line-up marks with a pencil or sharpie or white out or whatever. Now grip the pinion yoke and see how far it moves before the gear stops it. Try it in both directions. If the marks are ever more than 3/8" or so away, it's a bad sign for the gears / setup.
For reference, my 1957 Chevy truck with as-far-as-we-know-original 55T rear end - the marks only misalign like 1/4".
So a healthy 8.25... 2" is way out of line, by my method.

it should be able to move in N, not in P. sounds normal.

I have an appointment with a gear guy next Tuesday to have it checked out. I cant tell what's up but there is a grinding noise coming from the rear end when I accelerate and then again when I take my foot off the gas so it needs to be looked at.

Looks like the test drive will have to wait Tom until after it get repaired.

Here is a look at some of the stuff I been able to get done to complete the axel install.

Cut down and installed the shock mounts that Rob gave me.

Moved the tie rod over to the correct spot but the HD stabilizer shock I got was too fat to fit. (I know the feeling)

One will fit though just need a skinny one.

OK I put the Jeep on a lift and got it up to 60mph on the speedo and had a mechanic friend listen to it. The vibration was so much that it resonated down the drive shaft making it sound like it was coming from the rear end. Using a stethoscope he could hear it coming from the TC, he thinks, so I will be taking out the TC and replacing the rear bearing. Here I go down a road that I hate! Replacing stuff, hoping it will fix it.

Did you check the ujoints in the rear driveshaft? I dont see an SYE in your sig, do you have one? I've never used a stethescope on my jeep before, but if the driveshaft was vibrating, you could say it was coming from the rear corner panel, or your driver side headlight and be just as right.

I would pull the rear DS and try it again . Hey Skip can you post pics of the rear pinion to DS from the side? maybe you have some axle wrap issues?
