Eh. Just not for me, I don't want the extra stress back there, the lost departure angle, or the loss of vision out the rear. Not to mention the serious cost to get one that doesn't look like crap (I can't weld).

Roof Rack FTW. Lock it down somehow if you are worried about theft, slow down if you are worried about being top heavy. I ran my spare on top (admittedly, a puny 225/75/15) and drove like holy hell up and down I-15 for a good long while... never even noticed it was there.
If you can't "feel" when your XJ is about at the tipping point and react accordingly... you shouldn't be wheeling it.
Yup, that settles it: we should all buy roof racks.

Damned straight! I'm building the crossbars today and then Ill find 2 4X6 gate frames cheap... hole saw and drill press....buddies welder...tall glass o milk for the zinc poisoning and away I go

I ran a spare on my roof for a while until I built the hitch mount swing down tire carrier. I only use that for exploration type runs, and when going camping and such.

For my roof rack, I had a piece of 3/16" plate laying around. I cut into a crude hourglass shape. burned a 1-1/4" hole in the center and welded a 1" nut on the bottom side. Bolted the plate to the stock cross bars (actually have 4 bars to spread load). Then took a 1" anchor bolt because it already had the bent in it, and welded a plate at the proper height. Then I could just toss the tire up there and stab the center hole with the bolt and tighten it down. Never had an issue that way. Less weight than a full blown rack, and cheaper too. Plate was free, extra cross bars were free, 1" bolt and nut I already had, just had to buy a few 3/8" bolts to secure the plate to the cross bars.

Pics from when I first built mine. I wanted to add a place to put the Viair and Tank. It's bolted through the floor, the fire ext is on one side with a Flashlight mounted on the other.
Plenty of room inside for parts, oil, Straps, tools that don't fit in the small tool box. With the tool box I wanted to be able to pull it out when I needed without lifting the lid.

It's been in for a couple of years now and the MDF is starting to show wear, looking at some of the pics here I may have to rebuild soon.

I also have straps going to the factor cargo mounts that I put on when wheeling, Just not sure how well the latches were going to hold in a roll over.

Wow, I really like that!

Roof Rack?

Just sold it :D I ran my spare up there before, but I got tired of catching the rack when out on the trails and getting a 33" spare up and down from there was hard enough. I'd rather not try a 35... Didn't like the idea of the extra weight up there either, not so much on the road as on the trail.

I want to do 2 spares so one on the roof for trips and a rack on the back w/ one, but I'm planning to install a backup camera. My nieghbors truck has a cam and he can see every thing out back better then I can and his hitch to!
Nice screen on the dash in color + he can add 3 more cams.

You should check out the Tailbone from DetoursUSA. It addresses all your concerns & costs hundreds less than a full bumper.

I thought about making a cargo box, but I really didn't want to carry around the extra junk during the week. Since I rarely use my back seat I decided to ditch it, and use the space for the spare. This setup seems to work pretty well, plus everything is down low and spread out.

Can you get the spare out and and the flat back in, through the side door?

Mine was set up like yours, but I hated having to unload everything to get the spare out, and then load it all back up once the flat was in.

That's why I reversed everything: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=977669

SCORE!... I have that same toolbox for the JY

Dude its an awesome junkyard box, has everything you need, easy to carry in and quality tools.

Problem is the actual box I have has started break down, the tabs no longer hold the box closed because they are gone(I got a big velcro strap now).

I have two set actually, the other has the left side "wing" come off, and is basically useless, I wish they would still sell the same kit, but the newest version has less in it and doesn't have regular screwdrivers, just bit drivers. Grrrr.

i think it would be smart of the people who build these boxes to start building them out of metal... OR make replacement boxes for them at a fairly cheap price, my popular mechanics box broke a clip and the crease where it folds is starting to tear apart

Those of you with the homemade cargo box with the slide out drawers. Do you have any pictures of how you guys secured it to the floor? I'm about to make one and just thinking of different ways to secure it. Thanks!

I drilled out the tie downs and bolted the box down using the holes left. 3/8"x3" stainless, I believe. The box is all screwed and glued with exception of the top, which is just screwed to allow access to the bolts to allow removal of box. Sorry no pictures of securing.
