Phil and Opie are competing in Calrocs again this weekend at Donner Ski Area. I hope they can pull out a win. The guy who barely beat them last time is a very experienced competitor, but Phil was very close in points. Pretty good for his first time driving, and in a rig he'd never driven before. He's driving my buggy again, so with a little more seat time maybe this time they can pull out the win.

Good luck to you guys.......go get 'em!

Phil said they rolled backwards on the first course of the day. They needed to replace a broken steering box and then continue.

ouch

Did the sektor shaft finally give way.

no, the cap on the front of the box split in two pieces...

I can only assume that when the vehicle hit the ground, and broke the wheel, punctured the tire, sheared the drag link, and a host of other minor issues, it jammed the steering system so hard the pressure in the fron of the box caused it to crack?

Maybe Lee can tell us more after we ship it back to him.

The cap is actually the steering stop on those. I didn't know the incident was quite that catastophic. The force on the pitman arm probably overextended the main pision and since the cap is held in with a huge C-clip, it stressed it and the cap broke.

Did you have to run with the spare tire on the back?

Spare was optional. They were considering adding it and/or removing it depending on whether they felt the buggy would benefit from the extra weight in the rear on a given obstacle. At least that was the plan when Richard and Phil were talking about it during the hand-off...

So was Richard laughing as he said this to Phil? :roflmao:

I'm bummed they got taken out so early. Even though it benifitted us(we were running against them), I thought they had the best shot of beating Dan, and possibly taking the overall points win from him. They did have a pretty clean day on Sunday.

Can't wait to run against them next year!

Yeah, they finished Sunday with an 11, which is a pretty good day. Even though they maxed the last 3 courses on Sat because they were broken, they still finished 2nd in points for the season. Congrats to Phil and Opie for a good season.

I wanna see that drag link, it's .288 wall DOM. Looks like the beefed up double shear pitman arm held up.

I'm not sure if the link had a bend in it before that day, but it definitely does now :banghead:

edit - looks like it didnt used to... It bent on the passenger side knuckle side of the flange where the tie rod mounts - and cracked the weld right there.

Sheared the double adjuster clean. Found the spare in the bag under the passenger seat only after I'd booger welded up the broken one, and added some extra plate to gusset it. :banghead:

Cracked the weld in the double shear section of the pitman arm and bent the bolt that goes through the heim. Welded up the crack in the bent position. :banghead:

Whoops. :confused1
