This was sent to me by a friend.

"Don't know whether you heard about this, but Denzel Washington and his family visited the troups at Brook Army Medical Center, in San Antonio,Texas (BAMC) the other day. This is where soldiers that have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the States, especially burn victims. They have buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a hotel where soldiers' families can stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is staying in the hospital. BAMC has quite a few of these houses on base but as you can imagine, they are almost completely filled most of the time.

While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his check book out and wrote a check for the full amount right there on the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts to hear it.

The question I have is why does Alec Baldwin, Modonna, Sean Penn and other Hollywood types make front page news with their anti-everything America crap and this doesn't even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper except the base newspaper in San Antonio."

I can tell you why - it's the old newsie's maxim, $ 4 1 7 sells (spaced and altered - you all know the word anyhow.)

This won't make any ink, simply because it's not controversial. Nevermind the fact that it's exactly the sort of thing I'd like to see in news more often - I hardly watch the news anymore because it's so damn depressing.

I'd like to see more of this sort of thing coming out of Hollywierd - but why do the right thing? Why do anything good? The more crap you can stir up, the more ink you'll get - and we all know "There's no such thing as bad publicity, as long as they spell your name right."

Meanwhile, Bravo Zulu for Denzel!

Denzel is the mutts nuts.

Close.
I've always admired the man, and hearing this makes me like him even more, but alas, it not true.
Nonetheless, his contributions are VERY generous and appreciated. I have a good friend staying at the Fisher House at Walter Reed in DC..

Actor's gift for wounded GIs generous...

WASHINGTON - It reads like a Hollywood script: Denzel Washington, overcome with emotion after a visit with wounded troops, pulls out his checkbook and pays for construction of a new Fisher House.

But, just like many movies, the story is a little bit of truth with a lot of special effects added.

Officials from the Fisher House Foundation want the public to know the Academy Award-winning actor is a generous donor to their efforts. But an e-mail forward which has him single-handedly building new facilities for them is nothing more than an urban legend.

"He has given us one of the most substantial donations we have ever received," foundation spokesman James Weiskopf said, declining to give a specific amount.

Weiskopf said he has been fielding questions about Washington's donation for about a month, since he saw the e-mail rumor surface.

Washington and his wife visited wounded troops at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio in December and took part in a Purple Heart ceremony.

Weiskopf said the actor also toured one of the nearby Fisher Houses ‹ living facilities for the families of wounded troops - and offered a generous donation to help with future projects.

But the confusion began later that night, when foundation officials announced plans to build a new facility near BAMC, at a cost of more than $1 million. Simultaneously, they also made public Washington's donation.

"Somebody put two and two together, even though they weren't related," Weiskopf said.

A spokesman for Rogers and Cowan, the publicity firm that represents Washington, would not offer further comment on the issue. Foundation officials say they're thrilled with the actor's generosity, but they don't want the e-mail rumor to exaggerate and spoil the story.

Fisher House note: The Stars & Stripes article is factually correct except for the paragraph beginning with "But the confusion..." The announcements of the plan to build a new Fisher House and Denzel Washington's pledge were made by the Commander, Brooke Army Medical Center, and not by Fisher House Foundation officials.

Huh...well he does more than most in his place...so I still respect him.

My money has been going to the USO and Wounded Warrior Foundation.

Yup, I was at BAMC when he was there, but I never got to see him. There are still some decent folks out there that make their living in Hollowood.....but not many....

Even if he didn't foot the bill for an entire facility, I've still got to hand it to him for doing SOMETHING - which is more than most of the Hollywierd types are doing.

Moreover, it's not donating to the "Cause de jeur" - like South Pacific Tsunami victims or somesuch (granted, those people needed help. But donating to that cause is more of a publicity stunt than anything else, y'ask me. I'd be more impressed to heard of the donation a year or so later...)

This is kinda like Steve Buscemi going to work Ground Zero in 01 with his old fire company - while I haven't had a half chance to verify, it's a good thing if true. He didn't want the publicity out - he did it because he thought it was right. (Anyone else ever have a chance to look into this?)

It bothers me that most of these types are generally treated as some sort of expert in something (ditto "atheletes") just because they get a lot of face time on TV. If you don't know anything about a subject, you are not entitled to hold an opinion on that subject - why is it so difficult for so many people to understand that?
