Well I didn't know till after the order and payment, but Currie's quality control Sucks!
I have purchased Sooooo much jeep suspension stuff from Currie that I thought that they had to have just as good of axle's and housings and such. Well I was Sooo wrong. I have purchased and recommended Currie stuff to prolly a thousand people between, JA, Rockcrawler, Pirate, JU, Colorado, and on the trail and at meets. But I never had the $ to drop on a axle build.
I have a guy that I did a cage and seats for in a CJ and he told me he wanted front and rear axles new from someone. So we did the searching. Dynatrac was a little outa our price for the 60's, and tri county is just a POS company and MIT I have heard too much negative about. SO Currie being very local was our best choice, or so we thought.
We went in and sat down with a guy that seemed to know enough to get them in trouble and yet not big trouble at least. We ordered up front and rear HD large tube 9" 's. With axles (35sp rear, 31 front), their suposive high strength 9+ case and what they called good as new, used housing for the front, their big bearing new pinion supports, and yokes. The rest of the parts we ordered from PORC to save us about 700-800$.
Well the housings looks Awesome. I had a issue with the 9+ "race case" not fitting a 4.86 gear and Detroit, and looked for someone with enough experience to know what they are doing with a 9". I have done many many setups but never a 9" so I found a guy here on the board (name I will keep off here just cause) that seemed to get recommended and I found had all the tools for these.
Now to the reason for this post.
First thing we found was that the Currie 9+ "Race Case" was in fact Junk. The case was a Very poor casting to start with and even a Detroit locker will not fit without just as much or MORE grinding then a stock case, and a 4.86 gear wouldn't even fit with out that same amount of grinding. If this is normal then WTF does "race case" mean? Ever seen a street/strip car with less then a 4.86? typ not. Again WTF, they designed this case in house (or so its said) to replace the weaker and bad fitting stock cases, HA! yeah right.
Then on top of that it was pointed out to me that Currie didn't even use finished bolts! The bolts were cut down and NOT even chamfered at the tips! Again WTF.. This is their Top of the line case that they sell as their Strongest and best case!
OK OK on to the front. The stock case took a little massaging for the ring gear and Detroit, not alot but a little bit was necc. Less then what the Currie "race Case" would have needed. After everything was setup and the pattern was givin the OK, the pinion support was the only thing left to finish bolting down. The initial setup was done with 1 bolt in the pinion support for simplicity of removal for each adjustment.
That was when it was found that the pinion support had 2 of the 5 bolt holes lined up with the stock case. Yes with the pinion support rotated to where its designed to be bolted down the holes were not either drilled accurately or the case they Sold us was defective. After seeing the QC of the race case I bet its the pinion support being machined, off.
So the solution is to, this afternoon at lunch taking it all back down to Currie and seeing if they will make it right. That will be the test to see if they are a company or respect or crap. If they handle it like they should and take care of their crap then they might save some face with me, if not then I will never recommend another Currie product again.
So the reason for this being in Mod forum.
CAREFUL ordering from Currie and if you do MAKE SURE you can fit the junk together before you leave their showroom! DONT LEAVE thinking you have quality parts, Prove it to yourself first before leaving.
