New build: Tealie

Here I'm using my big ass nose to line up the cut:

I assume this is the reason Sam had me do all his cutting...

good to see the Chz parts made their way on to live another day......I like seeing my old parts on rigs that are still in the game.

Went wheeling! Blew a power steering line in the first hour and had to trek back to Lafayette for a new one which killed two hours. Otherwise pretty uneventful, tried some obstacles and was disappointed to not get through them. This is me failing to climb a ledge, shortly before ripping off my entire exhaust behind the crossmember.

In general everything seemed a lot harder than it should be. On Sunday it occurred to me to check my tire pressures: 15, 21, 22, and 27 :dunce:

Going to try 12-15 next time and maybe I'll have better results, go figure. Anyway it was still a good day, and even a bad day wheeling is better than a good day at work!

Meganne said the same thing!

in that case, I have been known to "tuck in my shirt" occassionally :D

Well I ripped off my exhaust last time, and I'm usually hungover while wheeling, so it was top priority to get that fixed. I had a full exhaust out in the shed, so I put that on and welded it (no clamps this time!) Now it's the quietest this Jeep has ever been!

Also I decided to throw on the long arms I had sitting around. I am running with a single upper to limit the binding, but I am using a 1/2" bolt to hold it to the truss so I'm not worried about it.

You can see the still-shiny Bilstein peeking out too. I need some extra bumpstopping in the back, but overall this is the nicest riding trail rig I've had. That was one of my major goals with this build and I'm thrilled it rides so nice.

I finally got around to mounting my XD9000 too. I bought 25' each of red and black #2 welding cable, and crimped the ends myself:

I took the solenoids out of the box, and mounted them on the inside fender under the hood:

Then I cut the plastic enclosure to fit around the solenoids:

I thought I was pretty clever, for a minute. Then I realized that with the winch remote plugged in, I can't shut the hood. Damn.

So it looks like I'll be moving the remote plug to the side of the enclosure. Or just making longer leads and moving the plug somewhere else altogether. Or running it through the firewall and making in-cab winch controls. I haven't decided yet, but it's all light gauge wire so it's cheap and easy to change later.

Also, this may be the first year that I don't have a ton of work to do before Winterfest! :D

Go with in cab remote, that is pimp...and you can make your copilot get out and run cord while you just chillax.

I will have to see where a good mounting location would be. If I have the room I'll mount the plug in there next to it, then if I ever need to use the remote I can just run it out the window.

If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and heat shrink the terminal ends at the winch, that little bit of exposed wire will corrode fast.

Run the winch plug to the flat spot in front of the t'case shifter, that would be P.I.M.P.

I had some shrink tubing but it wasn't big enough, then I said "screw it" and figured it would be fine. Glad to know it definitely needs it, I'll get some bigger stuff today.

I think I will be ordering some synthetic rope before WF. Any thoughts on getting 100' of rope vs. 50' of rope and a 50' extension? I'm leaning towards 50+50 so I can keep less rope on the drum.

If I ever get my winch mounted I am probably running the plug into the cab somewhere on the center console to plug in my controller.

Then it would just end up being another thing you'd have to dig out of the back of the jeep.

Yup, drum it up. When was the last time you had a pull that only needed 50' of line?

Just get 80' and use a tow strap if you need more length.....

Somone (cant find it) makes an interface box that allows you to use your cruise control buttons on the steering wheel for winch in/ out... that would be neat

Here's a write-up on it but I can't find the product itself: http://www.stu-offroad.com/recovery/twc/twc-1.htm

Can't find the business any more, very cool idea though.

I just placed an order with Prime 4x4 for their coin tray (ash tray, whatever) switch panel. My plan is to mount the on/off and in/out switches there, since I don't have any fancy ass lights or anything. Then I will steal Byron's idea and put the 5-pin socket in the front of the console as well.

The synthetic rope purchase is waiting on me to not be such a cheap ass.
