I should have known better thinking my truck was all ready for moab. Its been wandering around more and more the last few days and then i turn i could hear/feel the wheel bearings grinding. I jacked up the drivers side of the front axle last night and grabbed the wheel and there was almost an inch of play in an out at the top of the tire.
I repacked and tightened both wheel bearings when the dana 44 was under the comanche, the driver side had play again after only a few weeks under my xj so i tightened it up again, and now that it was loose again i decided to pull the whole hub/rotor assy. off of the spindle and see what was going on. When i pulled everything apart i started cleaning the bearings to see if they were toast...then the race for the outer wheel bearing just fell out
uke:
The hub is ruined, the wheel bearing looks like its been loose for years and the race has worn the seating surface inside of the hub to the point where you can wiggle the race probably 1/8" in any direction!! No wonder the bearings kept "coming loose". Ive driven to every autozone, advanced auto, and checker around my house and it appears that the hub assemblies are no longer available. They are still listed on advanced autos website as part # BD61706 from a company called wagner, but nobody can order/get one for me.
Short of going to the junkyard and pulling one myself, does anybody have one laying around, or know of a place i can order one and have it in a day or two? If i cant find a new one i guess ill have to go pull a used one. Pretty much any ford 5x5.5 hub will work, from the early 70s through the early 90s.
heres a pic of what im after so no one confuses what i need with a lockout hub:
